The last thing that needed to be done was to remove the stump from a once 15 foot Lilac. My brother said 'Good Luck with that!' which is bro-speak for "I ain't helping as it's not going to be easy" ... Needless to say that was the spur I needed to give me the determination to complete the removal.
Two days, and language that would shock a sailor, with a spade and crow bar and I eventually got it out. Now the view of the new climbing roses are unimpaired.
Pic 1. The removal has started.
Pic 2. The stump is out (garden fork for size)
Pic 3. The crater (now filled back in, once I sieved all the rooty bits out of the soil).
Finally a question. You'll remember that I transplanted a Rose Goujard into the new bed (about 2-3 weeks ago). It was between 30-40 years old and so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Now I notice that it has red buds appearing on the canes (which I left at 12" high). Should I now breath a sigh of relief that it has survived and not cut it further back this year and just feed and mulch it next month.
Having to stop after lifting few compost bags and pots around, I often wonder at the things you have achieved in your garden @PeterAberdeen Well done..
So lovely. @DSRose One of my friends has a floribunda rose Claire Marshall which is quite a glorious pink, blooms in clusters and apparently smells of old roses.
Or there is a lovely pink HT some of us got after seeing Marlorena's, called Sweet Parfum de Provence or The Anniversary Rose. I love it. Smells like a tamarillo fruit tree and mine kept blooming into the first week of December. Terrific work @PeterAberdeen... I am smitten with Agatha.😍🐕😍🐕😍
You'll enjoy a good bath tonight, Peter... huge trunk on that Lilac.. Yes those little red dots on your rose are a good sign, so no need for anything else, just carry on as you said.
I like those ferns in your wall.. whilst not exactly so, there's something epiphytic about them..
Not long now, Spring just around the corner... can't wait to get feeding my roses and clematis.. I think we have a major storm on the horizon though.. I was wondering what happened to them, we didn't get the last one..

From my research (limited I have to admit) I think the ferns are Maidenhair. I liked them so they are getting to stay. Mind you, I am not sure if they are there because of the damper micro-climate caused by the two lilac trees that were there previously.
Great news re the Rose Goujard. Mum will be delighted when I tell her. So I will not prune further and in March feed with Toprose and then mulch with garden compost, but not manure for their first year. (I did add manure when planting as well as the Mycorrhizal Fungi).
The unknown yellow one also seems to be budding up. I can see swellings beginning to appear - I'll post the pic when they are more prominent, as the canes on it are about 18" and may need a trim back by about 6".
Thanks everyone, cannot wait till bath time this evening @Marlorena

Border is looking great now.
