So stupid fire. Can’t believe people are still so stupid in regards to the fire risk. I read yesterday that people were still using weed burners and didn’t think anything was wrong with it.

It’s a good idea though. @wild edges had some large tank plans some years ago
I ended up slightly down on capacity thanks to a tank stand collapse. I still have a good 1000 litres of rain water stored up thanks to that recent wet period though. I could have been at full capacity with a bit of forethought but until I get a pump it's still a lot of work to move water around.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Last winter I was called mad by my family as I filled about 40 2l bottles with our overflowing rain water and popped them in the greenhouse. They have changed their opinion now, especially when they want to "borrow" a bottle for their orchids.
My emergency stash might not go far but it's helped keep the blueberries they love so much alive.
On the radio it said that each year £ 2 billion goes abroad to the parent companies of our water suppliers maybe it's time that was stopped and the money spent here
Unfortunately mac12 the same can be said for the energy companies, the transportation etc…. Privatization meant that there are now a lot of overseas interests in all of the old national services. Some degree of guaranteed re investment is usually required, but is it ever controlled?

I've got 3x250l and 1x100l waterbutts already but they are bone dry so I'm planning another two and thinking where more could go but they are amazingly expensive for something that everyone should have. Why does doing the right things always cost so much?
Have a look on eBay or local Facebook pages for Blue Farm Containers. You can get a tap kit for the bottom and stand them on bricks, we just dip ours, although my feet would be off the ground to get to the bottom foot of water.

The privatisation of our means of existence stinks to high heaven ... it was totally and utterly immoral and done for personal gain ... tantamount to treason in my view.
I have always thought that privatisation of water supply was ridiculous. It's an absolutely essential service and any surplus should be ploughed back into improving supply and eliminating leaks as much as possible. Paying dividends to shareholders simply shouldn't be happening.
We actually already have a large tank, like a mini swimming pool, at the back of our house. The previous owners installed it as a fire water reservoir as we are off grid.
Sadly it is no use at the moment as it needed re-rendering. It sits empty, cleaned and prepped, but it is too hot to apply the render.
The mortar for the second layer of breeze blocks, to complete the repair of the dam for our smaller pond, was already starting to dry yesterday before each block could be put in place, and they were all stacked ready to hand!
At least they should both be be finished and able to fill up over autumn/winter and make the situation better for next year.
