But what I don’t understand is why some people seem to have different public/private boundaries for people on tv to the ones they have for the plumber in their home who is not on tv?
I mean, people can have a two way dialogue with the plumber in their house .., a type of reciprocal relationship … whereas their relationship with someone on tv is only one way … is it to do with imagination/fantasy … or ….?

I don't do 'indignant' @VictorMeldrew. I just asked a question and found the responses interesting. Some, I agreed with. Some,I didn't. I am also aware that perhaps there are reasons for interest that I hadn't considered. But my views haven't changed substantially. Perhaps you could put the spoon away for now.
Then along comes @B3 with a somewhat indignant "Why is it our business?" This got 8 likes suggesting that the OP (a relative newcomer) was wrong to ask the question.
I take it as a non-rhetorical and interesting question. On one level it's none of my (our) business at all. On the other hand I admit I am curious. I liked his old garden very much and felt quite invested in the roses he was growing - I wanted to know how his climbers turned out. I like gravel/dry gardening and leant quite a bit from some of the species he was trying and have since seeded some myself. I admired his woodland planting. I imagine it would hurt to walk away from all that work and the excited vision he had for the place....
Having a brief glance on Google, I see the Mirror and Express and (and probably everyone else) have shouty and intrusive reports on Adam's private life - which is entirely horrid (I didn't open or read the articles). I don't envy the family's public/private quandry. It's not a life I would choose.
I wouldn't want a friend of mine to receive the scrutiny Monty and his life receive. People feel free to pubically condemn his jumpers, shoes, hair, financial investments, interior design choices, syntax and role at the BBC. He has certainly become a piece of public property and seems to incite a degree of uncomfortable envy or resentment. I can say, with some feeling, that I wish people would leave him be.
Hopefully @grai will take the thread as good natured discussion.
It's an interesting question - how involved do we get with "celebrity" lives? Social media and reality TV thrives on seeming to "inviting the public in" - with Twitter etc. I'm not on any social media apart form this forum; I don't know if MD or Adam go in for it much.
My dad's job involved him appearing on TV. He used to get occasional 'fan mail' and invitations to make public appearances locally, which used to amuse and confuse me in equal measure. He always replied to letters and accepted invitations (because he believed that it was the polite thing to do) but was an extremely private person. As a collective, I think the general public are overly concerned with the private life of folk, whether each individual courts celebrity status (whatever that is) or not.
Unfortunately @VictorMeldrew seems to like to criticise the lack of friendliness on the forum at regular intervals. I am surprised he is still here.
Victor is fairly new. The forum takes a bit of getting used to. I assume good faith. 🌱
I wish I could feel good faith @Fire. But it's not the forum that requires getting used to it's those in the forum who consider themselves the 'inner sanctum' and the ensuing pile-ons when you dare to say anything critical, however justified.
So daring to question the 'unfriendly' way a relatively new poster has been treated makes me "cantankerous". Well thanks for pointing that out so clearly @Dovefromabove. Normally I could see the funny side of that.
