Thanks for that info, Hostafan. Seems like such a good idea, especially as it seems that even at ā€˜attended’ cremations, the actual cremation doesn’t take place until later anyway.
Ā I’d like that too. The family could have a gathering at a more convenient time, and my ashes could attend if wanted! I’ve also been considering donating my body to science, if they’ll have it. Having benefitted as a student from the generosity of others, would be a good thing.
Search " direct cremation " Some charge about £3,500 but others as little as £950. I went to the a local funeral directors and haggled them down to £1,300.
Beware companies saying " no hidden extras " I called one to be told ,Ā
"having the ashes couriered back to you costs an extra £115"
    my response wasĀ
" Couriered back? why? will they be in a hurry? "Ā
She didn't think it was funny.Ā
It's what I want too.Ā  As cheap as possible please.Ā  I'm unlikely to appreciate any frills and furbelows ... and they can stick my ashes in the post.Ā  Ā OH knows what to do with them.Ā

Folk left behind can raise a pint of Adnams bitter if they like ...Ā

Hostafan, if nothing else positive comes out of your unhappy situation, at least a few of us will be having serious thoughts and conversations about what we want done with our remains.
Ignore the rest of this post if you might find it too upsetting at the moment.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to loved ones, to do what helps them to come to terms with their loss, but I would hate to think of the money and effort wasted if they thought that my last wishes were to have an expensive and lengthy display of public grief.Ā

My mother’s funeral started with a lengthy funeral mass, which she definitely had wanted, then a drive to the crematorium for another, thankfully short, ceremony, with her coffin disappearing behind a curtain to be disposed of later. And with another family waiting to follow us in, as we had done with the family before us. She would heartily have approved of my decision to choose the cheapest and most basic coffin on offer, although I noticed at the funeral that she had actually been given a rather posher one. I suspect they didn’t actually even have the cheapie one, just pictures of it in the catalogue to guilt relatives into spending more!Ā

I researched Home burials, and home cremations too.Ā
Very straightforward actually, but my Daughter said home cremation was " utterly barbaric "Ā  :(

Maybe home cremations might not be advisable at the moment ... might cremate the whole of the county ...Ā  ;)

I think of it as doing a "Bowie". I don't think many people were aware of direct cremation before David Bowie chose that method of departure. It would certainly be my choice.

    Exactly.Ā
    That's when I first heard about it.Ā

The first time I knew of it being done was abut 10 years ago when my best friend's husband chose it ... his ashes went up in a firework rocket over the village at a big bonfire party ... more real tears shed there than at any funeral I've ever been to ... it was a marvellous and truly fitting occasion.Ā Ā
