Morning all - another sunny / warm / dry day....😎

@Biglad - where you used to holiday is probably my favourite part of Suffolk. Adnams brewery / beer and freshly caught fish with chips being as much of a draw as the scenery!

I also particularly like the Aldeburgh / Snape area a little further south with it's views over the river and reed beds and the fishermens' boats and fresh fish sheds on the beach.

At Wenhaston, Woottens Plants (Β https://www.woottensplants.com/Β ) used to be my favourite nursery. Areal plantsman's nursery with very high quality plants and very knowledgable staff. Unfortunately they closed to the public after the death of the original owner so you can no longer just stop for a mooch (never, ever came away empty handed).Β

They do open for selected open days which is great if you happen to be in the area. Failing that, their online shop really is excellent so you could have a little bit of Suffolk sun in your garden ....

LB - the post digger spades work by removing plugs of soil / leaf debris. The soil / silt needs to be firm / dry enough that you can remove a plug. If it's a sloppy mess they won't work. That's what's left in the bottom of my drain chamber now so I need to fashion a small secure scoop on a long handle to scoop the rest out.

If it helps think about using an ice cream scoop. If the ice cream's nice and firm - it'll work. If it's a bit of a soft, melted mess - it won't.

Ice cream and drains - not a great combo!😁

I'm planning to go on a bit of a UK tour @Topbird - revisiting places from my youth! I definitely remember the fish and chips at the seaside :)Β

If we're correct with Wenhaston, I'd imagine finding the holiday cottage wouldn't be too difficult. In my mind's eye, it wasn't a big place....

It's still a small, sleepy village @biglad with a lovely little church with a famous Doom Painting.

The 16thC painting (unusually on wooden panels) was whitewashed over several centuries ago when such things were 'illegal'. The panel was removed during 19C renovations and thrown into the churchyard to be burnt on the bonfire. That night it rained (it does actually do that in Suffolk - albeit very occasionallyπŸ˜‰) which removed some of the white wash and revealed the painting.

Fortunately it was spotted, the panel was saved, restored and is now on display in the church. Well worth a visit.Β

Southwold is still a lovely place to be (despite the number of second-homers) and the town and harbour hasn't changed much at all since I was a kiddle (longer ago than you!).

Thanks @Topbird - my appetite for a trip down memory lane has increased. I recall a pub with a massive garden on a corner but, potentially, that was nearby rather than in the village. I think I was 9-10 the last time we went so the memories are a bit hazy and intermingled! I was more interested in finding grass to kick a ball around on or taking photos with my brand-new Brownie cameraΒ  :D than taking much notice of the world around me!

There is the Star Inn which does have a large garden... Never been there but (from the web photos) it looks like a proper country pub and the menu doesn't sound bad either.

Come and have a pint of Adnams!!!!

Oooh! - Just seen - they've got a beer festival on this weekend. What a shame I'll be busy getting ready to go away early Monday morning. We could have taken the bikes and the camper and had a nice little night away with proper beer and F&C's....

Thanks @Topbird - that could well be the one! Road on two sides of a big expanse of grass is what I can remember from the beer garden.

Afternoon all. Rain has stopped any thought of play here today so I've done the shopping, made some lemon and herb chicken to freeze for later.
It is lovely to read your memories and knowledge of Suffolk T'Bird and Biglad.
Thanks for further description of the post spade T'Bird. Your explanation has saved me some money as the pond is full of gloop and not firm mud I could dig out. A giant ice cream scoop would be the answer but I've had a look at drain spades that might be just the job.
I was wondering when you were heading off to Germany - looking forward to more 'Travels From T'Bird' stories. My sis was on the phone yesterday and we are hoping to get away to France in October. Haven't yet decided on driving or flying but there is a huge difference in costs. Still time for planning.
