I had 3 WMs in a large galvanised tub last year, 60cm is about right.

This is just about my first dahlia flower this year, I have a soft spot for Lou Farman.

    Lovely!
  • Don't be too jealous when you see mine 😄☹️
Absolute car crash, they have been completely frazzled by the sun. I don't get it really, when they're meant to like it? No one else's seem to be in this state.

As I've said elsewhere, I suspect it's the change that's as hard as the temps. A plant going from 20oC one day to 36oC - cloudy to intense Med sun - one day to the next is going to batter any plant. The cells in the leaves might just be too assaulted - like going from warm weather to intense frost.

Do your dahlias get shade for a part of the day @Crazybeelady ? There does look like that there is some happy green growth in there. Through the season I always strip off the ragged, brown or yellow leaves - they do happen. Are you watering them?

I'm considering whether Mexican Star (the small red ones) are worth growing again. They get over five ft and I have plants in my three biggest pots. They smell of chocolate on opening, they make good cut flowers, I like the red and the bees love them to snooze and snack; but the plants don't give much impact; the blooms often open deformed. Bishop of Llan is a better plant, I reckon, and I can see  why it has been cultivated for so long.

    I might swap to matilda.

  • They don't really get shade there until around 5pm. On the worst hot days I've been balancing an umbrella over them! I've been watering plenty, lugging it all downstairs from the bath. But I think positioning will change next year!

I'm not sure I agree, @Fire. In Mexico they often grow in mountainous areas, with massive changes in temperature.
I think food and water are the key. Mine have been fine in the heat this year, but I do give them a lot of food and water.
