Morning everyone, nice bright start but cool. Volunteer day today haven't been for a while. The Gardener I usually work with won't be around as his wife is terminally ill, at home receiving palliative care. I never know what to say in these situations. She has been fighting cancer in various ways for a number of years so it wasn't unexpected but that doesn't make it any easier.
It's so hard to know what to say @Allotment Boy ... I usually say something along the lines of 'I'm sorry ... I hope she's reasonably comfortable ...' ... stuff like that, so that they know if they want to talk it's ok with me ... and next time I see them I'll say 'How's things?' so if they want to have a good rage/cry etc they can ... but otherwise I try to give them a bit of something akin to normality ... it's like when I speak to my brother ... I say 'How's things?' so if he wants to talk about the farm and ignore his health he can take the lead ...

Morning all. Fingers crossed for Charlie, interesting to read that part of his exam included Brighton. Glad you arrived home safely Doc, it is strange how, once people and life moves on, places seem to change somewhat. A busy week ahead for you Dove, enjoy your visit with Wonky. I'm off to the dentist this morning, large back tooth to come out. Don't mind having teeth out but now I'm much older I do seem to bruise more easily. Last time I had a lovely blue face and a black eye! Hope you all have a good day.
Morning all, cloudy and very mild today. Didn't sleep much at all last night made worse by the fact I have had to stop my anti histamine tablets for a week before an allergy test next week, so now have sneezing and bad rhinitis. I think I might wear a mask in the garden and see if that helps. I don't think we are going to see much rain for the forseeable except for the odd thunderstorm and that will be the wrong type of rain! Catch up with you all later
If anyone's at all interested in the history of Chinese thought, art, social history etc, I hope you're listening to Melvin Bragg's In Our Time on R4 ... if not you can listen again of course on BBC Sounds ....... I'm absolutely transfixed ...

Hurrumph! The best laid plans etc ... I had an hour free this morning to get into the front garden to cut back the bushy salvias and other stuff I couldn't do earlier because it's a bit of a frost pocket out there ... and now the windowcleaner is out there doing the neighbours' windows and will be in our front garden shortly ... not only will we be in each other's way in this garden, he knows me via my former work and will try to chat with me from next door's and opposite's gardens ... I've come indoors ... I'll have to try again over the weekend.
However, on the bright side, I've arranged to meet up with @Busy-Lizzie tomorrow for coffee (and maybe 'a little smackerel of something'?) and hopefully also to pick up some manure for the new asparagus bed ...

Morning folks, it's much better here this morning, dry and fairly warm. Just had my usual walk then I've got to go and have my 4th jab which was postponed when I got Covid back in March/April. We've just made our annual trip back to the ancestral village in Oxfordshire where my Mum, aunts and grandparents are buried. As it's one of my favourite villages and not too away, I try to go several times a year. It helps they have a very good French style restaurant/pub there as well!
Enjoy your meeting with Busy-Lizzie @Dovefromabove. We're staying in Norfolk next month so may be able to meet up with you two and Didyw ? as well.
Just seen a lovely pic of grandson, all kitted out for his Duke of Edinburgh hike today, his backpack looks a trifle heavy, hope he'll be okay - he's the cook tonight! Fingers crossed for Charlie.
I had nothing planned for tomorrow then @Dovefromabove rang up to arrange coffee in a GC and my brother, who lives in Wales, rang to say he'll be in Ipswich tomorrow and can he spend Friday night. I said yes, so long as he can stand the cockerel at 5am! The guest bedroom window looks out over the garden and the tree over the fence where the cockerel perches.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
