@Littlegarden ..thank you.. No I don't do anything here, everything lives whatever and does what it wants to do, I like to see a snail family.. I'm a strange one in that I actually like aphids too, I find them fascinating little creatures, and if there is one on my hand, I gently put it back on a rose.. .. I do like to try and prove that you can grow an ornamental garden this way [I no longer grow fruit and veg].. without fuss and bother.. I feed my roses but otherwise I don't feed the chemical industry.. ... Delphiniums I buy fresh each year as potted plants and grow them more as annuals.. they're already a foot high at time of planting.. it's been very dry this Spring, hardly seen any slugs.. ..seen here with some Austins..
Gertrude jekyll, I'm particularly proud of this one as its the first I've grown from a cutting. Starlight Symphony both in close up and against the dark stone wall and finally Felicia an end of season bargain which I'm not sure about, its healthy but the necks are a bit weak, I'm hoping it will toughen up a bit.Â
Thank you Fire and Marlorena - such a vibrant blue those delphiniums, great contrast with the softer colours. My front garden needs a bit more of that oomph, I think.
Today’s revelations…
First bloom opening on Mme. Antoine Mari:
Love Song, love the dusky lavender of the earlier blooms:
And the other new bourbon, Catherine Guillot, both of these have the promised strong fragrance. So far, Catherine (a seedling of Louise Odier) is the more refined of the two but she has had a head start..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
It appears my rascal of a dog couldn't wait to see what my new patio rose looked like inside its buds, either (apologies for the gardener's nails). Harrumph.
While you are about, can I ask you about your Mme. Alfred Carriere? I have a young one going spare. I moved from another location where it’s blush tones clashed with the adjacent yellow/orange colours. I’m wondering if I might grow it in a large pot and wrap it around my east/north corner in a similar manner to yours. I think yours is in the ground but in a narrow strip? What do you think? It seems a waste to just chuck it out!
Anyone else feel free to jump in of course..

@nollie I don't know if Mdme AC would be happy in even a large pot, it's true that it is in a narrow bed but although to the front is the tarmac road round the corner(about 60cm) is the gravel drive so it that direction the roots are unrestricted. When I first planted it I asked for advice on pruning and Marlorena commented that it wasn't altogether the right Rose for the space but I assume that was because of its sprawling habit. It does need to be tied in very frequently or it would be catching wandering passers-by. I tie it in up to about 2m but above that it does its own thing.
Lovely Starlight symphony @Suesyn. I like those roses with prominent stamens. Bought Jacqueline du Pre this year, but gave it away. Also your MAC is doing well in that narrow bed.
Unlabelled HT, Susan Williams Ellis, Blue moon.
I had given up on SWE as the blooms shatter very quickly and had mildew. I even offered that rose on Freecycle. No takers, so potted up and put it in a sheltered spot for my son. He hasn't yet taken it. It has come up well this year with lots of buds.Â
Royal Celebration below. It is truly purple now, my mobile phone camera is not capturing the colour correctly.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
I’ve been battling ants I. One of my roses and decided to fully repot the rose as it was looking really sad. When I dug it up, I noticed it had these strange growths on the stem and the root system is teeny considering it’s nearly two years old. Any ideas of what it is and is the rose salvageable?
It’s a young lycedas I bought from TNT in oct 2020.Â
Also, hi all!! I’ve been so embarrassed to share my photos as my garden is a state 😪
