Huge bloom of Dame de Coeur in a vase as the wind has started blowing and it is de-petalling (I don't know whether that is the right word!) many of roses.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Have been very busy with work, couldn't comment. Loving all roses and garden photos. I have been adding new rose related words to my vocabulary and de-petalling is good description 😊
A year ago I came here looking for help with my Wollerton Old Hall and now I look forward to reading this thread every day — thank you all for your kind and generous advice, and for sharing your lovely gardens!
Here's the first bloom on WOH this year, as always shy and requiring some acrobatics to capture it
ORA now has a few flowers fully open
A couple of alliums — Ambassador
Metallic Shine
And a view of my rose border in the safe colours of Vanessa Bell, ORA, alliums and nepeta
My earlier alliums haven’t done great this year. I’ve only got one purple sensation flower! Do they need feeding maybe? I would have had two but I kicked one off 😐
Chives doing well though! I like how they’ll just squeeze in anywhere and send up their little lollipop flowers to add to whatever’s already there. They’re a pain to germinate though. I’ve had a tray in a propagator for months now.
Now this came as a shock! I didn’t plant this iris, or at least I hadn’t intended too. It’s popped up in the shed bed.
In our very first round of buying plants for the garden we bought a pack of Dutch iris bulbs from Wilko and planted them in the old bed in front of where the apple tree is (now under paving.) I hated them! Absolutely detested! They were such hideous neon colours and looked so unnatural.
So when we decided the next year to extend that bed and grow some veg in it. I dug out all those bulbs and tossed them. However I did save some little allium bulbs from that area and plant them in the shed bed, so this must have come across with those by mistake.
Three years later up this pops! At least it’s the least offensive of the colour mix. In fact I don’t mind it at all. Need some more for that bed now. Research suggests that they only become perennial in soil that stays fairly dry. But this is the bed that stays wet, and solid, and was covered in moss!
..lovely roses everyone,.. whether in bloom or not.. it's great to see bush shots like 'Celestial' too..and 'Rosy Cushion' seems popular.. 'Bajazzo' took my fancy I must say..
..I wonder if DA meant 23rd June instead of 23rd May? they say ''across the nation'' yet most people, especially up north, won't have their roses in full flush, maybe not even a bloom on that date. Ok for those in London or Bournemouth I suppose.. Have they thought this through?
'Reine Victoria'.. ..general shots..
gosh..those grey fence posts are darn ugly..
Lovely delphiniums in the background, they make the roses stand out even more. Do you do anything special to stop the slugs and snails? I have given up growing them, but seeing them near your roses makes me think maybe I should try again.
I’ll keep everyone posted on GdF standard. As it seems a fairly vigorous rose I’m hoping it won’t be too long before the Startled Mop transforms into the Weeping Wonder. Go @Mr. Vine Eye’s Malvern Hills! We really want to see you in the DA catalogue.
@Tack I was sorry to hear about the new bed, horse tail is a persistent b*gger. I am also in the position of not needing any more roses, I actually have orphans needing homes due to surprise nursery freebies and some changes in my plans. The scuppering of my ‘fedge’ project was a blow - I discovered huge, immovable boulders lurking near the surface of the ground just where I wanted to plant lots of climbers.
Some general shots of my front garden in fading evening light yesterday. I’m waiting for some perennials to fill out/go in to reduce all that bare earth in the middle and it’s still a work in progress. I’m trying to let go and be looser in the planting here, which suits the wild setting more but I’m finding it quite hard, goes against the grain!
And a few spotlights..

Ghislaine has not forgiven me for wrenching her out of the comfy veg bed ..
