@newbie77 it will get there š Mine is actually a group of three. I think this is one rose that justifies the expense as it hides itās awkward habit and gives a fuller display. They are very hungry beasts, need far more water, food and iron supplements to counteract my hard water than any of my other roses.
Phew, itās 30ĀŗC out there and too hot to garden. Itās due to get to 38c in a few days, if it does that will be a record for May. The heat is really pushing on the roses fast now but I have loads to potted roses to plant plus endless trays of young perennials - really not ideal to be planting out in this heat for them or me!
My new Buff Beauty has just opened. A typically untypical first bloom, very amber and more like a semi-double. I expect it needs to get itās feet down first before producing those big double blooms:
Colour comparison with Graham Thomas in much lighter shade, amazing how much the quality of light affects colour perception and rendering:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@WhereAreMySecateurs ... I would leave it on and enjoy what you have.Ā There's no need to disbud grafted roses.Ā Normal deadheading of the spent blooms is enough..
Thank you so much. I was hoping so!
Eustace, I love your roses, especially the frilly yellow one at the bottom of your post.
Eyes for You is blooming in my garden... I had to move it about 6 weeks ago, so glad it isn't dead tbh. Such a cute little flower.
About three or four years ago I saw a photo of Munstead Wood in bloom and thought I really must get one of those! But reading reviews about the ungainly habit put me off, so I dithered....kept thinking there'd be a rose of the same colour but a better habit out there somewhere.
@Nollie, yes group of three make sense for it. I wish I had bought three. I have two MW at different locations not next to each other.
Even though I have multiple of some austins, the only one I have planted as group of three is Summer song. Actually you can call it a group of 4 because I stuck in a Carolyn knight among them as well. As of now they have not merged into each other. They are four lanky things next to each other lol.
I think most Austins donāt really justify their advice and the expense to plant in threes but the other one that works really well for me in a trio is Lady Emma Hamilton. So it works well for the more compact ones. I also have Julia Child in a trio and probably didnāt need to do that, although they donāt grow half as big as Marlorenaās did so itās worked out fine. Self-regulating, perhaps?!

. a few from me, another fairly warm sunny day again. We were out in the countryside this morning and amazed to see red poppies already flowering. 'Lady of Shalott'.. 'Devoniensis'.. 'Lilac Bouquet'.. 'Scented Garden'.. 'Tottering by Gently'.. 'Cornelia'...Ā
The front border with walferdange starting and Ab Fab in the background. Folle framboise was already after 3 days burned so letās hope it was only the first bloom ..
@Mr. Vine Eye Thank you.. I might well submit a photo if I can get a good one this year.. I believe someone said DA might come to our actual garden to take some professional pics? I do hope your Malvern Hills will beef up later in the season in time for the comp!
Not sure if itās the power of social media or what but I am getting increasingly tempted to get myself an Olivia Austin.. it comes across as virtually disease free and blooms like thereās no tomorrow.. and the supposed light fragrance actually isnāt that unnoticeable.. I have managed to take a sniff at a bloom at the garden centre lately.. but I would end up breaking the promise of venturing out of my comfort zone of DA roses.. š
