    Lovely pics everyone.

Just to say @Mr Vine Eye, I put an old metal hanging basket over my nepetas, pegged down if in the ground or wedged in a pot. It protects the crown by stopping the cats from rolling on it and the stems soon grow through and hide the basket. Works a treat for me.

@Lizzie27, using old hanging basket is a very good idea. Thank you.

@Emptyheadtime, it’s great to see fresh new growth isn’t it? Clarence House looks a lovely rose, but, if I may, it’s seems to be planted awfully close to the dry base of the wall and would be better moved further out if you can. The usual recommendation is plant climbing roses 45cm from a wall (tho you can get away with a bit less if need be) and angled back toward the wall. This gives the roots and the new canes that will shoot from the base more space to grow and climb. A couple of illustrations here, you can see in the later photos stages how far away the new climber is planted:

I agree. I think the rose will struggle in that position.
  • Ok thanks for the advice @nollie and @fire. It’s my first year planting a climbing rose, I just thought it would grow up the trellis/wires better if closer. Novice error I guess but glad to have it pointed out now, As I said, I really like this rose so want to do what’s best for it. It’s only been in the ground about 2 weeks so should be easy enough to move out as above. Thank you šŸ‘

@Emptyheadtime gladĀ that was helpful, one is always nervous about giving unsolicited advice! No problem moving it a bit further out, it won’t even notice. When it produces climbing canes long enough to tie in to your trellis (?) feel free to ask for training tips of you need them. There are various methods depending on how flexible the canes are and the space available, but all involve bending the canes to as near as horizontal as possible so it produces shoots all along the cane. More shoots = more rose blooms = happy rose grower 😊
