My greenhouse water butt usually takes all winter to fill, it was empty day before yesterday... now it's full to overflowing.. we had a tremendous amount of rain in a short time, and overnight.. we're still in drought but that must have done some good..
@Eustace Here are some nice blooms of 'The Wren'.. you will get the colour and I should add that not all blooms droop. I expect it's a better rose when more mature. I should have kept it really..
'Bring Me Sunshine' stood up quite well to recent conditions.. 'Elizabeth' opening blooms are totally weatherproof, just wish the blooms lasted longer.. 'Indigo' I like very much but another with short lived blooms.. 2 days max it seems..
..another couple of pics of 'Indigo' I must say it has a divine scent and an upright shapely habit with excellent foliage.. it's staying.. the blooms are darker purple in June..
How bad is Elizabeth for shattering then, would you say, @Marlorena ? As bad as Eustacia Vye? EV is such a beautiful rose but she lasts about two days here.
@WhereAreMySecateurs .. 4 days in dry weather, 3 days in wet... EV similar I think but I've not noticed too much.. I suspect they're closely related..
Peter Beales now have 40% off container roses..... seriously tempted but I might pay them a visit...
Glad you and your garden are ok @Marlorena, quite frightening when that sort of thing happens.
I've been out playing with my new Easy Reach pruner - love the way it holds the cut off branches and doesn't drop them on my head!
@celcius_kkw, My EduH is about ten years old I believe, I'd have to check. It's not planted in a good situation though, too close to a wall/fence, too close to a very, very large birch tree, in very poor clay soil on a steep slope and faces East. Don't know what I was thinking of! I hadn't grown many roses before that and I've now learnt such a lot from folks on here, especially Marlorena. It's not even planted in my own garden as I put it outside my boundary wall/fence to cheer the neighbours up! They love it when it does flower, although I don't see the blooms often, maybe once a week when I put the bins out. It has now reached the trellis on top of the fence so I have high hopes of it next year flowering at the top and waving at me through the kitchen window!
@Lizzie27 gosh that’s one hell of a mature EduH ! It sounds like you’re not the biggest fan of it.. even if it has all those conditions working against it.. I must say for EduH it doesn’t bloom prolifically like some other climbers.. but each bloom is large and highly fragrant.. I’m sure it has put a smile on many a passerby with its scent Â
Havw you thought of replacing it with something else?Â
@Marlorena Glad the flood water dissipated quickly.. flash floods are indeed terrifying, as my mother once experienced it in the tropics.. water rose to knee height within minutes..!Â
Just been out and looked at my EdH (bin day tomorrow). It's roughly 9 ft high and about 6-7 ft wide but quite sparse. I believe it can get to 20 ft. I do like it and the perfume is to die for. The blooms are large, often too big for their stems so a bit floppy. it would probably do a lot better with a lot more water. I wouldn't put another rose there. I forgot to mention it's now competing with my wisteria which is trying to cover it.
My Etoile did well early in the spring and have been flowering sporadic since. I have changed the below training so that the display is more visible from the ground. I have more canes arching over the shed door. I have put in more Etoile to the left so that the whole large arch will be covered. I'm taking out an Euonymus, so they will have more room to explore. No doubt mine would like more water and would be flowering more freely now if they had it, but the plants look pretty robust and are not suffering much.
Being an over-pruner, I'm itching to take out one of the canes. But I think it's too soon as the plant below is only a few years old. I have had zero basals this year or last.

VERY tempting offer. Peter Beales have Bordure Camaieu in stock. If it is still there after payday next Friday...
