Thanks. I feel less foolish for not knowing more. If I had a bigger garden, more than 3x7m to plant on, I would certainly be more gung ho. 🥴 I'm not sure if that would be good thing or a bad thing. I do hope my fantasy head-garden does come to pass sometime soon; while I'm young enough to build it.Â
@Marlorena Thank you for the info on Elizabeth Rose, maybe I will wait for another year. Will the colour of Wild Rover fade if it's planted in afternoon sun? I have got TGG from German Nursery 'https://www.schmid-gartenpflanzen.de/' and that because I was after (Sir Edward Elgar, Radio Times - unfortunately  both have failed to grow) old Austin roses. I remember the strong pleasant scent that I've sniff ed at DA garden, the flower form was different hence I am confused. Do you think what I have got is 'The Generous Gardener' ? Many ThanksÂ
@Rojas Yes, those are typical August blooms on that rose, less full, more white, than what we see in June. The foliage and other features on your rose, i.e. pink buds, receptacle etc. are all the same. I feel sure that's The Generous Gardener.. ..similar to their website image. https://www.schmid-gartenpflanzen.de/rosen/the-generous-gardener.html
..I no longer have it, but these were blooms from my plant during August one year..
So its been delivery week here! The bargain primrose online pheno geno roses arrived, £12 ish each, very well packaged in a roomy box with bags to stop soil spilling, no squashing or crushing. Potting isnt great, a few tops poking out over and weird ground woodchippy potting material which was dry given the heat, but they all have buds and good fresh growth so no complaints, soon sort when planting. Far too hot currently but they are destined for the front garden along the edge of the path, for autumn planting, all low patio types. A recent purchase because I love a hulthemia, Babylon eyes flame, to be potted Dainty bess, TW sale buy during end of season potted sale, last winter I think? Vicious thorns but bees love it, huge flowers, prolific and very pretty. Munstead wood, thank you those that recommended it, I adore it. Very content in a big pot in that spot. Lady Emma Hamilton last years bare root, Delighted with it And finally.... A midsummer nights dream! Had birthday amazon vouchers and look what styles had! Its stunning, bees love it. Arrived covered in buds below which opened about a day later. Gorgeous. Spot tbc when I see how it does.
..that's a fabulous AMND @JessicaS Â so pleased you got it, and I hope you continue to be happy with it.. can black spot a bit at times but soon rebounds..
Hope you're all feeling better, those with health issues.. this heat is bad enough without being ill with it..
Nice piece of history there Marlorena... on how roses were sold those days and how people ordered them..
I remember going to the nurseries/ garden centres back home with my dad and picking up random roses judging by the way how it looks, without even sniffing them!!.. how my interests and taste have changed many years later......Â
Some of the roses surviving the heat here.. Young Lycidas.. Good old rose fragrance and flushes last a long time..
Jubilee celebration.. love the way petals are arranged..
Well I have no choice but to buy roses online, sight unseen! This thread is invaluable in helping me decide though, along with a couple more forums whose members’ climate occasionally approximate to my own.
@Rojas, since we all detect fragrance differently it could be you, but more likely just rose immaturity, weather, humidity levels or time of day you sniff. For me there is a sniff sweet spot between the sun warming a rose sufficiently to release the fragrance but before it gets too hot and burns it off. OH has a better sense of smell than me but doesn’t get Munstead or The Prince tho, the latter apparently smells vaguely of cats pee!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
