@Fire and @edhelka I suspect The Prince’s sheltered position against a wall has a lot to do with it. The flies and then slugs are freer to lurk there unnoticed, more difficult to get at to squish. Someone on Houzz forum was saying their roses against a wall suffer the most and that is true here too.
Big TP is putting out new growth at the moment so I’m hoping it misses the next lot - I suffer multiple sawfly cycles, some sneakily lay in the leaf stems rather than the canes, maybe the curled sawfly, but not sure.
Little TP (new, temporarily in a pot) is further away from the wall and has less sawfly damage, starting second flush:
Thick, shiny leaves like those on Astronomia do seem more impervious, finer foliage is probably easier to shred and digest. Astronomia is impervious to pretty much everything though:
Mme. Antoine Mari beginning to put out some nice blooms, with visitors:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Thinking again about which roses I can get rid of, I think I dont like all the wishy washy cream ones, they dont really brighten any corners. So yes I am not in love with Vanessa bell, Charles Darwin and this Bring me sunshine. Atleast Charles Darwin smells great and I can enjoy it in a vase if I pick it up early.
If I get rid of any eventually, the hulthermias will be the first to go. They don't withstand the elements here at all, and go extremely chlorotic even when the soil is well amended. Might be too alkaline for them?
Buff Beauty doesn't bowl me over but it does have a lovely scent. I have it near Tess, Amazing Day, Boule de Neige, Ferdinand Pichard and a lot of sweet peas in a corner- so the collective fragrance hits you. Doing OK even though it's rather shaded behind the other things- perhaps 2 hours of direct sun. I keep forgetting it's there and forgetting to fertilise it, hence its slow growth.
Tranquillity is beautiful but really zero scent. Not like the Lady of Shalott, where you can smell a faint fresh fruitiness especially if you pick her and bury your nose in the middle- but like a plastic flower. It's weird and disconcerting. But I like the look, and she's thornless as far as I can tell.
There is a sad old woman in the middle of this bloom.
And my salvias out front are full of bees 🐝
Various colours from the front garden... Gertrude is ending her first flush. Hope there's a good second one because her scent is fabulous. Astilbe and lavatera are starting up.
DA Amelia has finally bloomed. Always the last one.
Getting a bit crowded now! It pays to think ahead when planting out which I obviously didn't do. Will have to think what to do at the end of their flowering time. It's no wonder I can't find the labels on them! DA Grace (on the left) just takes over. First to flower and last to finish.
@dabolem Both my RhapsodyiB and Ebb Tide are in full sun, the latter is in a pot. The sellers of these roses recommend full sun for both but looking on HelpMeFind suggests from member ratings that Rhapsody and Blue For You can tolerate shade.
Useful video @Fire thanks. Not deadheading Knockout is a new labour saving knowledge.
@Nollie you started us all off on The Prince love, now you tell us he is not so charming. But definitely alluring looks there in your pic. Mine is totally different to last year, the necks drooped badly for the first flush but the stems are looking better for the next one so there may be a falling back in love.
I agree about the more washed out colours being somewhat lacking @newbie77 but thinking about mine I'm blaming a poor growing season so far. The dry has been extreme and there have been too many infuriating short drizzle showers that have damaged the blooms and upped the humidity while not watering the roots at all.
@Nollie I got a lot of various sawflies every year and they always come first for Belle Vichyssoise and MAC, which are on the same wall. But I don’t think they like roses on the walls more than the others, because My Desprez is on a wall to but it seems the sawflies are totally ignoring her. I really think they like roses with softer foliage and stems instead.
I like so much your Astronomia, I am tempted to get one even if she has no fragrance. Do you know if she grows well in dapple sun?
@Fire very interesting info on that video, I didn’t know of the 5 leaves rule.
@WhereAreMySecateurs I’ve read the Hulthemias need poor soil and, as they are originally from deserts, drought climate. Maybe that’s the problem. I thought about getting one, but here I have a somewhat humid climate and so I didn’t even try.
I have one question for you all, since I never feed my roses apart from november when I put some manure around them. Do you feed your roses all year around, even now, with this hot weather?
@Fran IOM that’s a Five Spot Burnet, a daytime moth, loads of them here. Although it could be a Seven Spot, difficult to spot the difference sometimes!
@Tack, to be fair to TP, the sawflies are not really a fault of the rose, but the necks did droop much more than usual in my first modest flush too. I wondered if it needed more phosphorus or potassium to strengthen them up or whether I was doing the opposite and overfeeding it. I never said it was an easy rose, but at it’s best it is glorious 😆
