At the beginning of last year, I bought a lot of bare root roses, but not long after that, my hub got a diagnosis that nobody wants. The roses were a bright splash of colour in an otherwise dismal year. And I didn't prune them. Is it too late now to give them a light prune, bearing in mind they're in their second season in the garden? Any advice gratefully acted upon.
@Allotment Boy are there roots sticking out the bottom of your cuttings pot yet?Â
Hi @Penny_Forthem, so sorry to hear of your hub’s diagnosis, but glad you joined us. I think you will be fine to prune your roses. Do share which roses you chose and I hope they bring you both pleasure and comfort this year too.Â
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie, no I can't see roots at the bottom of the pot yet. It's just that they all have growth, and /or buds breaking. Will 4 stems in one pot be OK a while longer, should I feed them ? Thanks.Â
Wonderful roses and lot of new faces.. all are welcome..
pressure washed my roses as they had these sticky residues left by Aphids..
On a positive note, saw some lady bugs..
Young Lycidas...
most with buds seem to be Eyes for you.. not surprised as it always blooms early among my roses..
I was wondering if any have started with liquid feeding? most of my roses (except the new season ones) are pretty advanced in terms of leafing up.. but not sure if I should start my liquid feed as the weather is still unpredictable.. suppose to drop to half the max temps by next Tuesday...

Canes store a surprising amount of energy inside and cuttings can start growing and appear to have taken even when there are no roots present.
Once you can see roots, you can empty out the pot, carefully separate them and then pot individually.
