Thankyou Marlorena, they look just like mine so I assume the white crawling bugs are the sawfly. I was worried by the way they ravaged the leaves last year so badly that I had to prune them right back. Not able to do much in the garden at the moment, due to long covid, but I’ve spent this morning ‘chair gardening’ squishing them and spraying with detergent solution for good measure- occupational therapy! Once again the garden aids mental health😀
Pleased to see my Malvern Hills bee hotel has its first guests! One hole blocked up and I saw a mason bee fly into one of the other sections too - A second after I spotted the blocked up part!
This is the Olivia Rose Austin I bought a couple of weeks ago. Are the flowers normally quite small? They seem smaller than I was expecting, or is it just because it's new and settling in? Other than that it seems pretty happy.
..I don't grow that rose but first blooms are rarely typical. Following blooms will improve on that and look more as you'd expect..
@Mr. Vine Eye ..did you make that yourself? it looks very good. Do the bees stay year round in it and do wasps get in?
@ciaranmcgrenera .. as they are from the bottom of your rose, they're just old leaves with some black spot fungus. Roses do this all the time, shedding old foliage from the lower parts.. Don't worry about it.. I just pick them off too if I notice.. It's when the latest, fresh upper growth succumbs as well, then you have problems..
Been staking the other plants away from my new roses today. They'll be ok when they're bigger just need a bit of assistance. Also watered new stuff and pots before this apparent warm wave arrives. Some interesting (to me) specimens: Mme Ernest Calvat, a mostly shade experiment
Red glow from Fountain, this has had buds for weeks now, but doing nothing
Draga, my first PG rose (suggesting there might be a second ) The leaves look thick they are so glossy but they're not.
Stephanie d'Ursel starting its second year. Really pleased with all my Lens roses from last year, wish I could get some more. Here merging with Roald Dahl in a pot.
Another Lens, Walferdange in ground behind newster Vintage Classic in the pot. I poked small sweet pea seeds into the pink pots and nasturtiums into the citrus colours. Will see how they get on.
This is my miserable malingerer, Countess of Wessex. A double shame as I have a thing for cream roses at the minute. It started dying back the first winter I planted it, 2020/21, moved it this winter and now it is being eaten. I've cut the buds off and put it on a special diet.
@Marlorena - its brand new this year, put it up end of March, start of April. They've just started using it.
I could have made one myself but instead - It was the cheapest I could find online! But I attached it to the wall expertly. 😁
@Fire knows better than me. But I think the idea is that you move the hotel to somewhere frost free and cool, like a shed or garage at the start of autumn. Then put it back out in March so they can start hatching out.
I think some people also empty out the pupae over winter, clean out the channels and do any maintenance needed on the wood of the hotel. Then I'm not sure where they put the pupae to hatch after that. Maybe just in a container with air holes and then release them like doves!?

..very good, I like it. You did a great job !.. I think it makes a garden cottagey, and homely looking..
@Victoria Sponge
I'm looking forward to seeing 'Vintage Classic' as it's one I've had my eyes on.. lots of lovely roses coming along as usual..
