Are we talking perennials' top growth here @GardenerSuze? I don't really cut them back until later, unless the top growth is just pulling out by itself - or being pulled out by the wind. That's another problem - the wind can just pull bits of plants out completely, so I sometimes have to cut back dead growth by about half to avoid stuff getting yanked out of the ground. Lost part of an Agastache in autumn. The gaura just couldn't cope with the weather here at all, despite having other planting around it, and all it's previous year's growth on. I knew it was risky trying them again, but that's how it is I also had a very mature white Cytisus almost pulled out completely by the wind last spring. It was a bit top heavy which won't have helped. Had to tie the b*gger to the fence
