Ideas for trees to enhance privacy

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for tree ideas as I seek more privacy across the back of my garden.  Hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here :)  I separately had some recommendations including columnar yews.  I'm not keen on leylandii, but I do like Italian Cypress trees.  They would ideally be evergreen and eventually be as high as a regular house.

Any ideas?  All thoughts welcome!

  • Could we have a photo or two please?  With a bit of clever utilisation of perspective it's often possible to provide privacy way before the trees ever need to get that tall.

A photo would be helpful as well as more info - the soil, aspect, location etc :)
I'm afraid Italian cypresses wouldn't suit every part of the UK either.
Allowing something to get to that height isn't always a good idea either - especially if there are neighbouring houses on the other side of where you want them. There are regulations about hedge heights. 2 or more plants/shrubs/trees the same, would be considered a hedge.

  • Good research!  :)  This is a previous spot and I took the advice to allow the other tree to grow and take the space

Thanks dovefromabove and fairy girl.  The garden is north-east facing.  I'm not sure about the soil but I think it is clay based.  The garden was previously beautifully enclosed with neighbouring trees, but sadly over time, they have been cut down, and our garden feels far less private.  I've posted two pictures.  Apologies, I cannot work out how to rotate the second picture.

Which side do you feel you need to create more privacy?  Who overlooks you? If you put tall trees all around they'll cast a lot of shade, affecting the lawn, and it'll feel a bit like 'living in a box'.

Is it more that you feel the need for more height in your surroundings?

Me too @Silver surfer ... and once those bare trees have leafed up again in spring theyi'll be far more imposing.

But I think if it were my garden I might feel the need to create a bit of height within the garden itself.  :)
