Ideas for trees to enhance privacy

  • Thanks everyone.   Previously there were trees on the other side of the border of the garden, across the side and back.  It left a feeling of there being woodland enclosing the garden.  We want to try recreate that where reasonable and possible.  I guess it is knowing what was there before and has been lost.  Previously you could see no houses, outbuilding, etc.  Attached is a picture albeit in the height of summer, but those trees have either been cut down or materially cut back.

Point taken on the height of the trees, so maybe something not as tall, but still would be good to re-introduce some foliage.  I'm thinking maybe a tree in the top left and right corner to give horizontal coverage.  Foliage on the right might help cover the gated fence which has now become visible due to plants being cut back with construction efforts.  But not too tall so as not to interfere with light for the lawn, and to Dovefromabove's point, adding some height.

    Any thoughts?

Amelanchier is recommended for gardens here quite often

Amelanchier would be fine, or any of the Sorbus [mountain ash not whitebeam] as they have light canopies, but I really don't see the need for it - much as I love both of those trees  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you, I will look at those options  :)

I do appreciate the comments and feedback.  It is a question of personal preference based on our experience in the garden historically.  It’s been sad to see well established plant life lost so we want to reintroduce that, while adding the feeing of enclosure and privacy.  Others may disagree, I understand.
  • Btw I had come across sorbus earlier today so glad it is mentioned here.  It looks lovely

That's the native one [aucuparia], but there are also lots of cultivated varieties with different coloured berries.

Thank you Fairygirl. Can I trouble you for some examples please?  And would you recommend buying online?  I can visit the local garden centre but it occurred to me to look online too :)
  • Btw amelanchier looks lovely too!  Both good options

There are good online nurseries for rowans as well as Amelanchiers. This is one:

Most garden centres will only have a few varieties of rowan. There aren't quite so many types of Amelanchier, and most are fairly similar  :)

  • Thank you Fairygirl and Songbird-1 :)

    Pippintrees looks great

The hoheria tree looks like a perfect option, because from what I can see, it has straight trunks and a nice coverage.  Is this an example you had in mind, Songbird?
