@floralies an i3 cpu is fine but the 4Gb ram is not sufficient. Windows 10 will run with  2Gb officially but in practice 4Gb is simply not enough ram by the time the operating system and all divers, services and applications have loaded.
Without the model number I cant tell you if the ram can be upgraded to 8Gb which would be the minimum to run Windows 10 without lagging.
The fact that you are currently running 64bit Windows 7 suggests that your machines ram is likely to be upgradeable past 4Gb as a 64 bit processor can access more than 4Gb of ram whereas a 32 bit processor cant..

I've upgraded hundreds of Dell desktops in my job before retirement and a guaranteed upgrade that will ensure you have a reliable working machine for many years to come when using Windows 10 is to upgrade to at least 6 but preferably 8Gb ram and install an SSD drive if you don't have one now.

If you can find a model number somewhere on the machine or in the BIOS I can tell you what your upgrade options area.  :)

Or if you go to this link https://uk.crucial.com/upgrades and click Crucial scanner then run the downloaded CrucialUKScan.exe file it will scan your computer and tell you what your current ram is and show if you can upgrade the RAM and suggest the ram chip to buy and what kind of hard drive you have (likely SATA) and suggest an SSD drive upgrade.

Thanks @Kili for all the info, i will look into it all. In the meantime i will chug along with what i have and AVG and use my phone.
  • Thanks @Kili, I  have an old MSI laptop with an i5 processor,  and it became sloth like with Win 7 let alone when I  upgraded it to 10.  Would love to upgrade as there are things won't run on a chromebook even though it's  super fast system.

Quite a few of the websites I used to browse on my mini iPad now tell me that my browser is no longer supported. I don’t think it has the capacity to upgrade. If it’s something I really want to look at, I use the iMac at home. Don’t want to fork out on a new iPad.

@Allotment Boy go to  https://uk.crucial.com/upgrades and run the CrucialUKScan.exe and it will scan your machine and advise of what can be upgraded. Certainly an SSD drive upgrade will make your machine a 100%  more responsive even if you cant upgrade the ram. an i5 processor is more than adequate for Windows 10.

We both have iPads,  too old now to update anymore,  so that means security could be a risk.
We’ve bought new ones, 10.2” 9th generation,  2021 models, £255. each.   Comes with a glass screen thrown in.
