I still don't understand why we don't protect the coast from erosion.  The Dutch do it, they even reclaim land from the sea, why can't we??

Why let stuff fall into the sea in the first place? Isn't that akin to people who collect rubbish that others throw on the ground? Isn't the fix to dispose of stuff properly?

Was just trying to tune the TV into the DVD player at the cottage where I'm staying and in the process there's an interview on BBC 1 where there are 4 guests and the interviewer all talking over each other. Good god how does anyone watch such stuff? It was a throw something at the TV moment for me, doesn't happen often thank goodness but then I don't watch such tripe.
I'll try again this evening but turn the sound down first.

The heart of the matter is that it costs too much. Managed retreat is the economically sensible option. Also, if you erect significant sea defences they can be very visually intrusive and are likely to be unpopular with much of the local electorate apart from the comparatively few threatened by sea incursion. And if you protect one stretch of coastline you’ll be likely to aggravate the situation a short distance beyond the defences.

Netherlands has 450km of coastline, we have nearly 18,000 km on the mainland and about 13,000 more if you include the islands.

It's not just Norfolk.  Other coastal areas are at risk and, as @BenCotto syas, the UK has a very long coastline with over 3000km at risk and already 2,300 of "protected" coastline.

There needs to be some creative thinking about living with coastal erosion, especially with rising sea levels and stronger storm surges.  There also needs to be a tad more empathy with and action for the people whose homes and livelihoods are affected now and in the future.   Just building concrete walls will be expensiven ugly, a disaster for wildlife and of short term benefit and will just move the problem further down the tidal line.

Have you just had a significant birthday then @B3?

I've been officially an old fart for ages now! I must admit I do feel especially old today as it's my son's 50th birthday - crikey, how did that happen?

Congrats @B3 .you've managed both "ends" at once then -   the suspicious looking cup of tea and the driving licence application :D
