So sorry to hear that many folks have problems in general with their surgeries. You had all best come to live near me. We have open surgery for 2 hours morning and afternoon. Just call in and wait. Or phone anytime for repeat prescriptions, phones are always answered, (they do ask for 2 days notice before you pop in to collect them), or to ask to speak to a Doctor who will then phone you back at the end of afternoon surgery. G/daughter who moved away to Sussex some 10 years ago came to visit here over Christmas bringing a nasty cough with her. Sent her off to see the Doc at the end of afternoon surgery. No problem, localised infection in one of her lungs diagnosed, anti-bios prescribed and dispensed immediately from the in house dispensary and back she came. Brilliant! Hope I haven't made too many of you jealous - or perhaps I have ........
Very impressed with the animal pins in your crackers, Wild Edges. I think I’ll buy a selection of pins next time we visit the local RSPB shop for bird food, and save them to pop in next years crackers.
Those were from RSPB crackers. They've done them for the last couple of years so I hope they'll do them again next year with different animals. The crackers and packaging are all plastic free (and the jokes weren't too bad).
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
@punkdoc the report does say spending increased for Covid and if you look at the right hand columns spending will be more then befre Covid.
I stand by what I say about social care provision and people taking responsibility for their own health re nutrition and avoiding obvious problems caused by obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking. Common sense.

That King's Fund report is a year old, @Obelixx. I suspect things may have changed in the past 12 months, not necessarily for the better... and the report does point out that although the total number of doctors and nurses had increased by 11% between 2011 and 2021, demand for medical services increased by more than that percentage. And in 2021 there were still 100,000 unfilled vacancies for healthcare professionals.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Yes, @Liriodendron, but if everyone took more care to be and stay healthy there would be less demand on the NHS. How many of the recent uptake in beds for flu and Covid have had their jabs?
Many of those vacancies were filled by EU citizens who have now gone home. Clearly there is a need to increase training places and pay levels to get more people qualified and willing to stay on and work oand maybe attract those who've left because pay and conditions are awful.
Nobody can conjure up 100,000 staff out of nowhere, no matter what their political affiliation and I would defend neither of the main parties for their attitudes to and policies for the NHS and social care provision and management.

I'm interested that there's increased demand on the NHS. Are people becoming less healthy, or have their expectations increased? My grandmother, who for much of her life had to pay if she wanted medical help, used to say she wouldn't "trouble the doctor". I've always lived in the NHS era, but saw the family doctor no more than a handful of times when a child, since my mother believed most diseases would be relieved by a home remedy, and would work their way out in a week or so. Fortunately she was usually right.
Now I live in a country where if you're between the ages of 6 and 70 you have to pay €50 to visit the doctor. It certainly concentrates the mind...

I think I must be truly blessed to live where I do because same a AnnaB I don't have any problems with my GP surgery. If I ring first thing and need to either speak to or see a doctor that day then then I do and if it were really urgent I feel sure that the doc would ring back very quickly. If I need to see one and it isn't important then I would within a few days.
I'm standing up for the NHS in this area, they do a jolly good job but I'm aware that isn't the case elsewhere.
.What I find really frustrating is that it is impossible to make a non urgent advance appointment. You join the 8 o'clock scramble for an appointment on the day or forget it. By 8.05 ,you can't even join the phone queue
