Of course they could find out if they stopped whatever else it is they’re doing … but then possibly something even more vital will be delayed. There’s a huge lack of staff … many have returned to mainland Europe … and at the same time there’s an increase in demand. They have to prioritise.

They could at the very least, be accurate about how long it will take for prescriptions to be approved.  Even the pharmacists at the chemists I go to are p'd off with this surgery.  They get more complaints about that one surgery than all the others.  Yes it's a large surgery but complaint levels don't just reflect that.  Pharmacists don't even have a dedicated number they can call to query anything, they have to get in the phone queue with everybody else.

And now for something completely different.  We had a visitor to the bird feeders at lunchtime and I've finally got around to trying to identify it.  It was either a merlin or a kestrel but the RSPB site is less than helpful at identification - doesn't even include falcons as birds of prey.

I asked Google for merlin+images and got a whole load of wizards!

Try searching by the latin name. https://www.bto.org/develop-your-skills/bird-identification/videos/bto-bird-id-kestrel-and-merlin Merlins are more likely to go for small birds though so that would be my guess. Unless it was after voles under the feeders.

Thanks @wild edges.  It was definitely after small birds as, after failing to catch any ground feeders, it flew into the big bay tree where they all congregate to have conferences and/or hide from predators or scary things like me filling the feeders.

Did it really require a fighter jet to shoot the Chinese balloon down? With a missile? It just looks like a bit of international willy waving while trying to destroy any evidence that it was actually just a weather balloon.

That's the one @Fairygirl.   Lovely to have one around tho maybe not so good for the small birds.  On the other hand, since we've arrived and started feeding them all year they have certainly gone forth and multiplied in both numbers and variety so I'm sure a few can be spared for a merlin.

They're quite common around the Pentlands too - over on the east side of Scotland. Habitat suits.
I've only seen them on that occasion, but next time I'm in Glen Lyon I'll keep my eyes peeled. Delightful birds  :)

We've had one here for a month or two I think @Fairygirl but it moves so fast we can never identify it, just a streak of grey and brown.   Yesterday was the first time we saw it miss a bird on the ground, hop onto the herb bed to hide behind the rosemary and then dive over into the bay tree.   It missed again but we had time to get a good look.
