Most pet insurance won't cover a dog after 8 years. We've always had 2,(used to be 3) Leo who is now 16 was already insured,we kept it up until it doubled. I buy 2 large bags of kibble from Lidl, they're under £5,Leo has pate, that's pennies. I have a "vet" plan,£16 a month, covers, wormers, flea treatment, anal gland sorting, all the basics. As the flea stuff alone was £5 a month, they all go by animals weight,so bigger the dog, bigger the savings. Also gives you 10% discount on operations. We bath and trim ourselves. Have done rough calculation, under £500 per annum for the 2. My curmudgeon of the day... you all know the neighbours/fence Saga. Sunday, beautiful day,I have 2 big washloads out, grandkids had stayed so 4 peoples washing, towels, bedding, throws. Kitchen window open. Open plan bungalow fills with smelly smoke,I stormed outside, got the washing in. Said to hubby,f*****g bonfire! He said no, neighbours having a BBQ, I said it didn't smell like a BBQ. They have a firepit!!! Sunday was windy, and it always blows from the sea side.
@Nanny Beach I can imagine how infuriating that must be but the smoke may not be the neighbours fault. My brother-in-law bought a fire pit and two bags of fuel which had 'smokeless' all over it. There was actually so much smoke that he had to put the damn thing out before we all suffocated. Given the saga of your neighbours, I may be being too kind to them.
I wish financial experts would stop telling people that they don't have to worry about their pensions as they'll be supported (ie funds won't go bust) - maybe funds won't fail, but the effect on the funds isn't being rolled back. And given no one predicted this pension issue, what do individuals do to lessen the effect? If money is moved - how do you know that gilts/bonds etc won't recover and the new fund fail due to some other gov or world occurrence? Gambling eh (and that's all investments/pensions are)?
I have never in the life of my pension had a 25% fall before (or a 25% increase either!) - BUT, we still have two months left in the year, so who knows.
The Tory cat with glasses had his own investment company didn't he? How can he disassociate what the Gov announced with the subsequent market turmoil? If that's the level of his understanding of the markets, what trust in any of his investment advice?
My thoughts exactly … does he not realise that, especially in a market-led economy, which is what he and his pals say they believe in, interest rates are an effect, not a cause. 🙄

My granddaughter messaged yesterday, could we meet up for a dog walk in the park after school. She mentioned the one in the next village to us,I said the one opposite her school, and we'd take her in the park cafe. Off we went, hubby sat down with dogs, lovely day. We queued, busy half a dozen people in front of us,no one keeps an eye on their kids anymore, touching unwrapped stuff, coughing over things, letting them run wild(apparently,it's called "gentle parenting") we get to the cashier,"cash or card?". I reply card. Her, "system is down, I can only take cash". I haven't got any. Why didn't she call out explain this. I told the big queue, now behind me what was happening. Hubby had a fiver,a tiny sausage roll was £3.79!! To think,a huge amount of people are demanding a "cashless society", when I go out with my neighbour, she always pays cash. During the pandemic, even our bank wouldn't allow you to pay cash in. Walked through the park,to another smaller cafe. Said to the man,(looks like he loves himself.... ladies will understand that expression!) Asked if his internet is down (sometimes it's a whole area) HE wants to know what it's got to do with me!! Take grandaughter to McDonald's, I want to go to the counter, big queues at the auto orders. She does order,it takes my card payment....no receipt! Go to counter, explain, she sends me to another cashier, explain again,he asks for the order number. I HAVEN'T GOT ONE!! He asks what the order is, grandaughter starts reciting it,he finnishes,it IS on the system and payment has been taken. Hubby has had to wait in the car with the dogs,a burger king has just opened, while she's waiting for her order,I walk to burger king for him. Ain't happy! Exactly the same thing happened in McDonald's back in the summer when I took my grandson in there, except they forgot the order twice, asked 3different people to see what was going on!
There's a large garden centre near us which is still card only. Maybe a network failure in the lead up to Christmas might convince them to accept cash again. I was in the queue in their cafe when a lady handed over a £10 note, the cashier took it OK and then said "Oh sorry, it's card only". In fairness there are big notices everywhere saying 'Card Only'. I just don't agree with it.
Chris-P, I actually said to my granddaughter we could have had a picnic! The weather was so lovely. She doesn't eat sandwiches,I do (naturally) make sausage rolls!! Just found another curmudgeon! I have never been in a burger king in my life,as I didn't drive, wasn't wearing glasses (distance) couldn't read the back menu,he asked for a "whopper". I did in fact question the price £6.79, looked on their site today,it should have been £4.79, I have been charged for a meal! Have tried sending email to the complaints/how did we do. It failed. Mind you, says on receipt "served by Stephen", there was only 2 young girls in there, cannot remember her name badge, short name Emma I think. Am going to have pay to park in town to visit branch. Grrrr.
