My father used to tell of being caught out by Milguy ( Mil gai if you prefer) in Scotland, it's written Milngavie. He told us when posted up to the area in the war, he waited ages for a bus before a kindly local explained he had let several go past, and he realised his error.
Maybe it would be a good idea if signs had a phonetic spelling in brackets or whatever underneath. Useful for visitors but it would certainly soil the locals' fun
Featherstonehaugh? Apparently pronounced as it is written and not Fanshaw as many think. By contrast, Sir George Everest, the surveyor general of India who have his name to the mountain, used the pronunciation Eve-rest not Ever-est.
