Thanks for the suggestions re the windows! I redid the french windows yesterday, will check them again when the sun is on them. Relative coming to stay tomorrow, so Waitrose this morning to stock up on supplies. Then a vacuum round this afternoon.
Had a referral to the local hospital some weeks ago, for a non life threatening but uncomfortable condition. Got a weirdly worded letter yesterday from the hospital. As far as I can gather, it says there are long waiting lists, I may be waiting for some considerable time, but they have been ‘listening to my concerns’ etc. When my appointment time comes, I may be offered a telephone or video call. My mind is boggling at the idea of a video call! The letter would not have won any Plain English awards, I had to read it several times to work out what it meant, and I’m no slouch at use of the English language. Luckily, I have already booked a private appointment next week with the consultant who treated me for a related problem, so at least I can get an opinion on what’s needed. Just so grateful that we are in a position to be able to pay for treatment.
Assuming a dog lasts 15 years just for easy maths then this means it costs £2000 a year (£166 a month) to run a dog. My budget plan for my average-sized dog allows £30/mnth for good quality food, treats and dental chews and £8.50/mnth for annual vet treatments. Add insurance at about £20/mnth and maybe a £7.50/mnth for accessories and you're still £100 short. It's still nearly £12k over the 15 years though. The article says grooming can be extra and I assume they add the cost of buying a dog but they still seem way out. Is anyone actually spending that kind of money on a dog?
Actually the drug dealer down the road has built a summer house for his dogs with a proper paved yard, fancy fencing and even portraits of the dogs mounted on the outside walls but I imagine he's a fairly special case.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
To be fair the garden did look terrible while he was in prison for making millions of pounds selling drugs but now he's out and a reformed character he's really spent some money improving it. It would be a great solace to the thousands of people whose lives were ruined that his dogs now have somewhere nice to take a dump. I bet as he gazes out of the window at his tacky pet portraits he barely thinks about the murdered families and people getting tortured and raped to fund his lifestyle.

To think that some folk suggest folk care more about pets than people?
I think a figure of £20 per month for pet insurance is very low, particularly if averaged over the life of the animal. I've seen many reports of pet insurance of well over £100 per month.
I just checked and the average is about £34.50 a month. I hate to think what level of inbreeding a dog has to have to warrant £100 a month I know those snub nosed dogs usually need expensive surgery to help them breathe at some point.
