  • I found this chap on a cosmos that was being cut back. Unless I'm mistaken (a distinct possibility), it's a large white that will overwinter as a pupa. I'm not sure where to put it, presumably outside in a corner somewhere - anyone know? The rest of that bit of the plant is in the compost bin

  • I know that this isn't very helpful, but my wife yelled up the stairs this morning that we had a hornet in the lounge. I was down pretty quickly, and dispatched of the offending insect.

Wife now tells me that if it is one of the Asian hornets, we are supposed to report it. How can I tell whether I killed an Asian one, a European one, or just a queen wasp?

Sorry, but there's not much left of the creature. It was sleepy, and I used a slate mat to crush it.
  • Pictures of them all here. They are very different.

  • Here's my pics of the dead creature.

  • It is the native hornet.
  • It looks like a European hornet, given the size. Thank you, @Alan Clark2 in Liverpool
    Or a very large wasp.
  • There is a moth I think that looks like a hornet

That caterpillar looks like a set of false teeth or something that fell off a totem pole.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Thanks for the ID of the Vapourer moth caterpillar. It was munching away fast the other day on the J artichoke leaves at Plot
Not sure what the orange one is -  seems all the big fluffy caterpillars are moths

  • Another daddy long legs. I would love to know what the weight of those water droplets must be compared to the weight of the insect. You have to feel some sympathy, don't you?
