Thanks for that Pete.8. I used to read that when I was young and learning gardening at my dad's side. I used to think that I was odd reading cartoon strips about gardening because most used to favour the Beano or some such. Happy memories.
the fact is no country grows corn that far apart in a row. row planting and block planting different. even farmers with machines don't grow sweet corn 18in appart in row. proper row block planting of corn is 7-12 in a row and 18-36 between rows and distance between row is only to get harvest equipment between rows.
7 inches is 18 cm it is and easy mistake to make in a place like uk that uses metric and the British imperial system
mr digwell comic april 8,1989 daily mirror that's 2 uk sources that says you can plant corn less than 36 in. 12in inches to be exact.
Now I'm totally confused @wargarden ... I've read right through the thread ... the only person who mentioned 36" anywhere was you ............ 😵
By the way, harvesting equipment doesn't need to go between the rows ... we use combine harvesters to harvest sweetcorn on farms in the UK ... they harvest quite a few rows at once ... depending on the width of the cutter bar.
A wider space between blocks of sweetcorn can be helpful for those picking their sweetcorn cobs by hand ... depending on the width of the gardener 😉
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
