Thank you Fire and SGL. Much milder weather is coming so I hope to have some decent harvest till winter. Luckily I don't depend financially on my smallholding, but I invested a lot in seeds, fertilizer and licences. Next year must be better.
@Ante1 well at least you have got some things to show for all of your hard work this season. I know that you are back to school soon so I hope that the seed sowing goes well and that more rain arrives. Sunflowers are fabulous!
Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
Good morning everyone. Still nor rain here, so drought continues. I began with digging second early potatoes. They are very quality, but there is at least 60% less than I expected. Also I pulled out some onions and they are just disgrace, very small, but I'll have for myself for winter. Autumn and winter crops still looking well, but if we don't get any rain till end of the month, they will also be affected by drought. I ordered some seeds (daikon, lettuce, spinach,...).
Last two tomato harvest, only 5kg.
Potatoes, Adora variety
Squashes came very late this year. Plants dropped off all previous fruits.
Onions
Grapes
I had few visitors, but they didn't help at all. 😁
Your produce sounds like mine here. Very bad year for tomatoes, onions (mine are smaller this year too) and potato yield. I have one butternut which is the same colour as yours, even though it was planted early spring! I hope it ripens! I notice that you have bindweed too in your butternut!! Grapes were shared out amongst the wasps and birds - I got some too! Yours look better than mine!! You have grown those long peppers; I have grown some too and in the beginning they were not very hot, but I had some in the fridge for a while and put them in a tomato salad last night - they were almost impossible to eat!! Do you have the same? Maybe because it is later in the season.
I have sowed seeds for a winter crop - various root vegetables, pak choy, spinach, scarole lettuce and mesclun. They have germinated, but I fear that they will get boiled in this heat!! I have put some boxes over them to shelter them from the sun.
Lovely to see your garden again!! I think you are back to school tomorrow, aren't you? Good luck with your class this year!
Hi @tui34! Sorry to hear that you have the same problems as I. I have bindweed on the field where are squashes and pumpkins. They can cope with weed, and I often don't have time for weeding. My peppers are very mild, but also have few hot varieties. Same problem with winter crops here. Forecast for whole next week is hot and sunny, without rain. Hope we will both have some better condition as soon as possible.
I'm back to school tomorrow, so I must rearrange my free time to handle with both, school and cottage.
After one more week still no rain, and temperature is quite high. School started last Monday, so I must balance between cottage and school. Not easy, but manageable. Watering is still most important task every day. I ordered some seeds and bulbs which arrived two days ago. Some seeds are for next year, and some can sow right now.
I harvested grapes yesterday, and it will be for jam and juice.
Last night I made tomato sauce for winter. Only seven jar, but it will be more.
Ooh Ante your crops may be less than last year but they still look very delicious to me! Especially those wonderful grapes. I found a recipe for grape jam Ante, so I will definitely give it a try. You have got a wide selection of seeds for next season. Don't do my trick in putting them somewhere 'safe' and then next year forgetting where you put them!
Have you got room for all of those hydrangeas if they take root??

Afternoon all. I'm bac to my diary after more than one month. Lot of things happened, but most important is that we had a lot of rain thru September. Now is still very warm and sunny, and it's forecasted at least till end of the October. Indian summer in full mode. My winter crops look excellent, and it's first time that I'm pleased with veggies this year. My computer died few weeks ago, so I lost most of my photographs. I have new laptop, and it's much easier to work on them. Sorry for the longer prelude. Potatoes are all out and crop is below any expectation. I have for my family, lady which helps me and some more to sell. Altogether 350 kg. As I said before, winter crops look very good and I have turnip, daikon, lettuce, spinach, chard, radishes, black radish, kohlrabi and brussels sprouts. Tomatoes are still producing, but it will not ripe outside. Last year I made green tomatoes chantey which delicious, so I might also this year. Now few photos.😊
This were first two sacks which I sold. I had Rodeo variety.
Kohlrabi
Black radish
Radishes. They are still small but in few days will be perfect.

We finally have some rain here - after 3 months of drought. Keep up the hard slog, you will need it for the winter months ahead.
