  • Out family's experience has been similar @didyw ... some years ago Bro had polyps removed from his colon at a private hospital ... but they perforated his bowel, didn't notice, sent him home where he collapsed because of a haemorrhage and the ambulance only just got him to A&E in time to save his life.

    • Ditto. Hubby had a hernia treated at Nuffield in Guildford and the patch got stuck where it shouldn't have been . Nuffield's response ? " go the the NHS hospital along the road and they'll fix it.  £ 3,500 well spent? NOPE!

    Morning all.

Oh dear, OH will be having (??) his hip replacement done in a private hospital but paid for by the NHS. They said it was urgent in 2020 and that a private hospital would be quicker. The op has been postponed 4 times now, first it was Covid, then they said his BP was up (it always is when he sees a doctor), then they said he might have a narrowed pulmonary artery so he had an angiogram and a scan. Pulmonary artery is OK. Now they say he may have scarring in his lungs and he has to have lung function tests and see a lung specialist. He has no symptoms, no breathlessness. He can hardly walk his hip has got so bad. Hip symptoms started in spring 2019, he's been waiting for his op since then.

We are going out for lunch today with 3 of our friends, a gastro pub which we really like.

  • @Busy-Lizzie a friend had her hip done at Spire, but like you OH it was done under the NHS.  The surgeon was one who worked for the NHS as well as privately, and all the follow-up was done at the NHS hospital  It was all fine.  I think that when it's done under the NHS it's a bit different.  I do hope your poor OH gets his new hip very soon 🤞

    Hi all

Lovely day here, managed to do a fair bit this morning.

Don't really want to enter into the NHS vs. private debate, except to say hip replacements can go wrong anywhere, but on the whole it is a safe operation wherever it is performed. also remember that the vast majority of surgeons who do private work, also work for the NHS.

    Good afternoon all!!

Overcast and grey this morning but the sun is peeping through now.

So I have decided to sort through my seeds - and there are many as I received another package from my friend in Avignon.  Many many seeds of tomato varieties, unfortunately I cannot send to anyone in Blighty, but I shall throw it open to the French panel and anyone in Europe and Ireland.  I will donate the rest to our lovely library in Beziers as they have a "gardener's table".

Looks like the dining room table will be busy for a bit.  Softly, softly .....

I had my hip operation done privately, the NHS reimburse some and private insurance here - pick up the rest.  Had no trouble re infection.  Good result.

    Have a pleasant day all.

Spring is definitely on the way, just been out in the garden and could hardly hear the Chinook helicopter overhead for the sound of birds twittering :D Joking apart it was an incredible noise from what sounded like hundreds of birds. Lots of crocus now flowering in the lawn and one daffodil so far.

I’ve had three separate ops done privately at Nuffield hospitals. I picked all the surgeons, all consultants at the local NHS hospital. No rush to kick me out afterwards, and very peaceful recovery in a private room. Worked in the NHS all my life, but happy to get the work done without having to wait. Would have felt confident with the surgery either way, but appreciated the private benefits. Also meant someone else got my place in the NHS waiting list.

When I worked in NHS Orthopedics our Consultants all worked privately as well. One would often send patients over to our ward post op if we had a spare bed because he said they would have better nursing care with us.
