@Oliya It is just a small patio rose that I inherited along with the house and unfortunately I don't know what the name of it is. I believe it is difficult to identify roses and especially red roses for some reason. If anyone can then @Marlorena would be our best bet. It is a marvellous little performer giving masses of blooms all summer. It was previously planted in a bed lost amongst other bigger shrubs so I rescued and relocated it to a spot where it can be appreciated.
Unfortunately that's the estate agent's photo as I didn't take any pictures. At the time I had a dog and always said that I'd get a lawn for him to run around so in 2008 I turfed it and dug a few beds and planted some ill chosen plants.
Once I figured out that plants had light requirements and the huge ash tree was why things weren't growing as well as they should, I ditched the beds in the middle of the lawn and made a shade bed instead in 2010. Ironically, the ash tree had heart rot and had to be cut down in 2012 after a huge branch almost crashed into the back of of my neighbour's house. Not having a tree felt wrong so I planted a maple in the shade bed.
In 2019, after the 2018 heatwave trashed my already rubbish lawn, I decided to do a complete makeover. I kept the shade bed but lifted the plants and put them into pots. The maple had gone into decline with no coming back so that had to come out and I replaced it with a wildlife friendly hawthorn. This was November 2019 when I'd finished putting everything together.
Unfortunately, once I put the gravel down in 2020, the garden looked like Felixstowe beach which definitely wasn't the look I'd been going for!
This last (I promise!) photo is from summer 2021. I switched around some of the planting and the green gage/plum trees had filled out a lot and it's much closer to what I want. I also made a barrel pond by the back raised bed which has been more successful than I was expecting.
There's still much to be done. I want the way through the beds to be less angular, more winding and narrower. The plan is to soften it by putting pots around the raised beds but that's going to take a few years to complete! I'm going to be experimenting with some annuals this year but I'm not sure how successful I'm going to be at growing things from seed 😬
@februarysgirl that's the way to do it - you've transformed a soulless space into a really lovely garden! The positioning of your trees is very clever - it makes the garden look wider and leads the eye down the garden as well as upwards. There's always room for a tree in a garden and well worth the effort!

I do like a courtyard garden reminds me of a previous place.
Nice job
@owd potter what is that beautiful blossoming rose on your photo from July 2021? It’s so bright and has so many flowers!😍

New system going in.
Everything is in pots so we can ring the changes, lat year used some of the annuals from the free seed with GW mag.
you're a bloody marvel.
