Oh dear … it doesn’t help the cause of the farmers advocating for more environmentally aware farming when someone like this doesn’t understand basic maths.

    “… A 1pc improvement on 100 farms is a 100pc improvement …”

https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/business/norfolk-farm-conservationist-jake-fiennes-speaking-at-cop26-8460178  (you’ll have to scroll down for the context of the quote)

If 100 farms are only doing 1% of what they should be doing, each improving to 2% can be interpreted as a 100% improvement.  The wonder of statistics and how they can be used.

    On statistics.

I'm reminded of something I said at a managers' meeting when a buyer said that by devoting a disproportionate amount of display footage to one of the lines for which he was rsponsible for buyinf in,  in one store, that the sales increase (at the expense of the space reduction for better selling  lines),  was 80%.

    (I'll post the censored version).

    My comment was,

"Four fifths of naff-all is still naff-all."

    His suggestion wasn't accepted.

  • There's a TV advertisement where a woman stops three men wearing ski masks about to enter a bank with the obvious intent to rob it. She explains how easy it would be for them to obtain money using the loan company she was representing.
The strap line at the bottom of the screen said the interest rate was 89%.
It made me think, perhaps she was the one who should have been wearing the mask?

    That's common knowledge.

I posted that because I thought the choice of scenario by the loan company made it amusing.

Common knowledge is definitely more prevalent that common sense which isn't that common at all.

That was really worth waiting for.
