So that would be Randox who are huge sponsor of the British Horseracing including the Grand National, which is run at Aintree ... where the late Mrs Paterson was Chair of Aintree Racecourse ... amongst other positions in British Horseracing.  She could see that his greed was going to bring her legitimate career crashing down as well as his own.  Poor woman.

And then of course there's Dido Harding ... she sits on the board of the Jockey Club ... and got given a job she wasn't up to ... wonder why?  But of course the Jockey Club has huge connections with Newmarket ... now remind me, who is the MP for Newmarket?
Could it possibly be Matt Hancock ......... of course it is. Silly me ...

Isn't astonishing how many spouses of government ministers over the years have been given such positions ?
Clearly all on their own merit with not one by virtue of their spouse?

I'm not saying SHE wasn't  but it's very strange how big a proportion of spouses of MPs get onto boards.
I'm not saying it's just this current lot, they've all been at it for decades.

Ambitious people pair up with ambitious people nowadays ... it's no longer enough for most MP's other halves to stay at home and manage the home and office and do the school run ... any more than it's enough for the wives/husbands of most successful business-people I know ... many of them have their own successful careers which lead to some grand sounding appointments ... whether in the same field or different ones.  Don't think it's just politicians.

That's not to say that someone isn't riding on their OH's coat-tails .... in many instances it's the MP, not their spouse  :/

Why on earth do people vote for a dim representative? Is it the amazing, hypnotic power of the rosette?

Because far more people vote for the party than vote for the candidate.  We all know that most newly elected MPs will do what they are told, irrespective of what they believe is the right thing to do.  If I'm honest, I couldn't identify our local MP in a lineup.

How bad were the candidates who came behind Rees Mogg , both in the party selection process and at the election?

Local party members select candidates they think will do as they want them to.
Voters vote for MPs they think will do as they want them to.
Prime ministers select ministers they think will do as they want them to.

Who wants an MP who will vote according to their conscience?  Only the rest of us  :/

There are a good few MPs to whom that would be a novel idea.
