Hi everyone, been out busy finishing the bulb planting, as well as some general cutting back and tidying up. More to do so need to get back out there. Regards to all.
Hello Been doing flying visits for the last couple of weeks so apologies for my absence to those who have needed moral support. I have been reading back and thinking of those with ailments, family issues and the general stresses of autumn.
The older of our two dogs, Jenny (ex racing greyhound) has been a bit under the weather. She's actually been a bit off for some time but various vet trips haven't got to the bottom of a persistent but intermittent foot infection. In the last couple of weeks one toe has become very swollen and not responding to ABs or topical treatments, so they took her in to investigate. Upshot of all that being she is now minus one toe which, it transpires, had a benign tumour in the bone which had almost completely destroyed it. Poor thing must have been in quite a lot of discomfort or even pain We don't know whether that was at the root of the infections. Time will tell. She is now known as 'Chickenfoot'.
Meanwhile, work has been busy, COP doesn't impinge on us much but it creates a bit of noise around what we do, not always helpful. It can be very depressing, probably a bit like punkdoc seeing media coverage of Covid and knowing the truth behind the often misleading headlines, when you are immersed in the Climate Emergency activities all the time, the media reports can be deeply frustrating. I spend a lot of time shouting at the TV.
Harvested the beans today, the ones I left on the vines to dry. Good crop this year, especially of the borlottis and 'the lazy housewife' french bean. The weather has been terribly wet - my sprouts have all been blown over or washed out of the ground, a ten year old apple tree came down a few weeks ago, which was very sad - nice cropper too. It may survive at a funny angle, we'll find out next spring, I suppose. I also picked the last almost ripe tomatoes today. Apologies to those that got blighted but it's been a stellar year for the toms here . Haven't got anywhere with tidying up the garden - it'll wait. I'll do bits and bobs on fine days through the winter - no great hurry.
Oh and I've done most of my C**mas shopping today. Just a few things to get in the town (we have a lovely 'green' shop in Tiverton that sells really nice eco gifts).
Hope you're all having a fine weekend, recovering from the illnesses, enjoying a bit of garden R&R

Good to see you @raisingirl 😊 poor Jenny … hope the op has removed the source of the problem and that she’ll be more comfortable now.
Our veg garden needs a good sort and tidy but since we returned from holiday OH has been busy either at work or remodelling our walk-in pantry and he doesn’t want me doing ‘big stuff’ without help as my knee gives way and dumps me on the ground, sometimes causing breakages; twice the breaks were my bones!
The cupboard is on the homeward stretch now so maybe we’ll get the been wigwam down before Christmas 😉

Here are some photos of Firework Night in our village in Norfolk. Two villages share the village hall which is in a field in the middle of farmland between the villages so I don't think it's too upsetting for pets.
It was a super display, but photos don't really show it how it was. There was a huge bonfire, villagers have been adding stuff all through October, and a hog roast. Refreshments were served in the village hall. Luckily OH and I found a couple of chairs, not too close to anyone. I was a bit surprised at the lack of masks, in France they would have been obligatory indoors, also the Covid Vaccination Pass.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
I've tried to keep up with the chat, but if I'd read all the pages I'd missed I wouldn't have time to post.
Particularly busy week, even by my standards. A French guest, adorable, but obviously time consuming for a week, no car, so I'm playing chauffeur and tourist guide. She lives 7 hours away, so not feasible to come for less than a week.
Adores Charlie. I've managed to get them to a Halloween party, the cinema, a chocolate making workshop, a Madeleine making workshop, an English/french conversation group, they made a Victoria Sponge, well .... with a French twist... they went shopping in Limoges, attended an English Coffee Morning and helped make Bacon Butties, went ten pin bowling, ate in a burger bar and a Michelin starred restaurant, we had a raclette evening and a pizza night and finished the week in a fabulous Italian restaurant. I'm now exhausted and feeling fat!
Also had to fire two more staff, one I'd decided had to go, the other crossed a line... The rest all raised their game, all very stressful but I think they realise I mean business.
Hugs to all, I hope @punkdoc is feeling better. @raisingirl, hope Jenny is feeling better too. C*** shopping, how very dare you!!!:😅
@Busy-Lizzie, not managed to find all your threads but hugs, seems you are in need of them.

Morning all. It’s not raining at the moment, but all the paths are very wet, so it seems that we had good rain overnight. There were a couple of loud thunder claps nearby last night while we were watching TV, but we didn’t lose power. All good then.
