    Speechless

I've met loads of lovely Americans. None of them are politicians or celebrities though. It's a bit like assuming all British people are like Nigel Cabbage, Boffle or Katie Price.

On the other hand, they have a serious problem with their cultural addiction to guns and violence. The shooting on a film set - it just makes absolutely no sense how it can happen

It's a tragedy for all concerned, including the man who fired the shot.

I'd say ESPECIALLY for him. He has to live with that. Like the guy who killed my nephew who rode his bike in front of his car.  Like the actor , totally innocent and the image  / knowledge will haunt them forever.

Why are they firing guns, even blanks? There's absolutely no need for it in this world of super CGI. And going further back in the logic, why yet another 'Western'? Are there no other stories to tell in America?

I don't imagine it is just the Americans that use guns on film sets, but I might be wrong.
How can you lie there and think of England

That story surely has to fall in to the 'You couldn't make it up' category.

Why not 'another Western'?  It's based on a true story, and one I wasn't aware of - I'm interested in history.  You might as well say 'Why another rom-com' or any other genre as there are thousands of films of whatever type out there already.
The big question is why was live ammunition on set at all, and why was it still on set after a stunt man had fired a gun with 2 live rounds a couple of days previous.  It sounds like a deliberate act by somebody.

Yeah, well I do say that, actually.
It may not only be Americans that have guns on film sets, but American culture drives the film industry internationally, films that make money tend to follow the American genre types, even if they are set in Japan or Kenya or Russia or even China. It has seeped into the popular expectation of what happens in films. There are lots - lots - of really good films made in the US and elsewhere that tell different parts of US history (much of which is far more interesting than the Wild West) and they get attention and win awards and that's all good. They aren't the ones that make the money though. 20 biggest money maker films of all time, the only ones that don't involve a big shoot out have dinosaurs or are cartoons (some of which involve cartoon shoot outs). Or there's the one where the boat sinks and hundreds of people die
