I've read through all of this thread and have seen the offensive posts from a specific member on various other threads.  My sympathies are with the people who have been targeted with his/her offensive posts. It can be awful to be the target of abuse.  That person has obvious problems.

But how does one alert the mods or lack of them to these posts?  Is clicking the flag icon the only means to do so?

  • You can click the flag and take the option of sending a report…. or you can PM @Daniel Haynes

Once again I seem to have missed the postings with which people have  issues. It would be nice to have the time and energy to read everything which is posted on the site.

Yes it is @Redwing. Click on the Flag then select report.
I can’t  believe that some who professes to have those qualifications and a responsible job can write in such a young teenage way.
The style of writing is from about a 15/16 year old at the most.
What adult would go on about angel poo or whatever it was, or overuse the word ‘like’. Only very young people do that.

I agree that this isn't about one person in bad health or attacking them.  This is a bigger issue. Has been and is still a system for moderation and it used to work perfectly well.

I think some people were resorting to flagging - just to get posts removed, but of course, the flagging system is so intermittent a lot of the time, that it doesn't always bear fruit. Nothing constructive seems to have happened anyway  :/

I'm getting slightly fed up with people being told to press ignore too. It simply doesn't solve the problem, for reasons we keep explaining till our heads are close to exploding. I'm not leaving inexperienced and new gardeners, who are asking for help, to make decisions about whether information in a post is right or wrong. If they were able to determine it, they wouldn't be asking for help in the first place. It makes no sense to me. Maybe I'm missing something completely.
I've had enough anyway. I'm not contributing to this thread any more.

If we ALL clicked 'Ignore' , @JoeX, the person's posts would still be available to anyone popping in with a valid query, suggestion, or idea.  A newcomer wouldn't necessarily realise - indeed, how could they? -  that the posters who were 'in the know' had chosen to 'ignore' the  perpetrator of the rants.

I'm very much of  the opinion that this forum needs moderators who are up to the task.  Now THAT'S the 'way to stay sane'.
They can use their own judgement to choose whose advice to follow, I don’t think people need to be bubble wrapped and prevented from reading something unpopular or incorrect.

But yes, any forum needs active moderators.

It’s worth noting that forums go through life cycles too.  Every so often a group will decide to move to another forum, create their own forum or change medium entirely in order to get the talking space that they want.

    Hello folks,

I'm a GW subscriber and have been for many years. Just looked at the GW online website and in the latest mag which states:- Website enquiries (for issues relating to registration, Secret Garden activation or forum access): [email protected].

This appears to be the only mention of the Forum on the How to get in touch (Page 150 Sept 2021). I've tried that link/email and it doesn't appear to work for me.

GW do have a Facebook and Twitter presence though - any thoughts on using those to stir up an official response?

I would add though I've only recently joined Facebook and rather wish I hadn't and am not very familiar with it.

  • The GW mag Twitter presence is pretty active, although it doesn't seem to have many people tweeting back to it, so it's hard to know if they would respond. I can't see them being thrilled to be called out on this by their subscribers.

Maybe I'm guilty of feeding a troll. I've been trying, when I post on "those" threads (and indeed any threads other than Curmudgeons' Corner and suchlike) to be careful to say when something's my experience or opinion, and to give a bit of relevant background to put it into context, and when I think something's wrong, to say why I think it's wrong, but I don't think that's any different to what others have been doing. So far I haven't been on the receiving end of anything nasty though, so maybe I'm lucky, or maybe I'm just too thick-skinned to notice.
