Octopus is happy to take new customers. No exit fees. This is a link. You get £50 to switch.

I got a quote from Octopus using your link - it's more expensive than British Gas!

Can you also believe that the surge in prices has caused a shortage of carbon dioxide? Is that me? Isn't the problem that there's tooooooo much CO2 being produced around the world - and aren't there any of those devices I've seen that capture CO2 from the air around? And if there are and that is what is being used, are they that inefficient that a price hike in energy makes them effectively unworkable?

As I understand, the shortage of CO2 is due to 2 big fertilizer plants currently shut down in the UK.
CO2 is a by-product of their industry and those 2 companies provided most of our CO2  supply.

  • Sorry, @Pete.8, I know how annoyed you must be and should have said that anyone  unsure about their situation should not panic in the light of the Citizen's Advice information.  In particular they have highlighted this message:

"If your energy supplier goes out of business

Don’t switch tariff or supplier until your account is moved to the new supplier. You might find it harder to get any money you’re owed if you switch before this happens."

My first reaction was to cancel my direct debit but I'm sure this would compromise my positive balance!!

Sorry about that Pete. I have been with them for years and my costs have gone down not up. I guess now is a very tough time to switch.

Yep - that's what they were saying. But global warming and CO2 as a greenhouse gas are bed partners. Surely, after 60 years plus (70..80..?) of knowing that there was an issue with CO2 you would have hoped that someone had looked at extracting the CO2 from the atmosphere wouldn't you (done - here https://theconversation.com/engineers-have-built-machines-to-scrub-co-from-the-air-but-will-it-halt-climate-change-152975)? - so not have to rely on CO2 being created from another process - which in itself should be being part of that capturing process. How can you have shortage of CO2?

Got me worried now. We currently pay BG for our gas, never got round to changing, but Bulb is our electric supplier. We switched to them from EDF, as they were offering 100% renewal electricity, and had the added advantage that we weren’t contributing to a French company with Chinese links, and building a dubious nuclear power plant.
I do hope that Bulb doesn’t go under completely, that’ll be a right nuisance.

I'm starting to understand the whole business of 'fixed tariffs' etc. They become valuable in uncertain times and crazy market spikes.
