There has been a huge surge in energy prices. Two energy companies have just gone under, but it looks like more will go too - the smaller, newer companies. It's worth going with bigger companies  - like Bulb or Octopus. I highly recommend Octopus. They are very transparent - about costs, bill changes etc. When I moved from a bigger companies to them I had a dramatic drop in bills costs.

I remember being promised cheap energy and real competition when Thatcher asset stripped the country of energy provision.
All we have now is a private cartel of 6 big , most foreign run, companies fixing prices .
    Who'd have thought eh?
I'm not a fan of the system we have, but this situation is not being driven by the energy companies. It's an international issue.
We don't pay more for energy in the UK per unit than elsewhere in Europe. Gas and electricity prices differ widely. Our gas is cheap relative to most of Europe.
THIS situation isn't, but they are all guilty of pretty much fixing prices amongst themselves which , in reality, stiffles competition.
Selling off the utiltities has been a long term disaster.Creaming off profits for shareholders and execting us, the tax payers to pick up the tab when it all goes tits up.

It seems to be storage problems here as much as anything re gas.

Your charges seem huge @Pete.8 - even before this.  :/

  • My renewal was came through Friday, best I could do was £680 extra per annum! Which is similar to the OP.

While we’ve done what we can and added extra insulation and new triple glazed windows and doors, our house is old and I’m not sure what else we can do?

Was going to look into maybe a google nest thermostat..and see if that helps…

    Thanks @Plantminded
I'm not panicking, I'm just very angry that the contract I have has become invalid and I've been moved to a much more expensive tariff without having any choice or say in the matter, and thanks to the state of the energy supply companies in this country there are no significantly better deals out there atm.
I guess the best approach is to see how the market is in 2-3 months and take it from there, but whatever I do I'll be paying £50 month extra until it gets sorted out

I think Bulb is one of the ones that's gone down the pan @Fire :/

I'm not sure there's much else you can do either @TheVanguard, especailly if you've triple glazed. Draughtproofing gaps round doors, heavily lined curtains etc. - they help a bit.

We import so much gas - it makes our supply and pricing unstable. It's another good reason to ditch it.

They were saying on R4 that not many of the remaining suppliers want to take on the customers who have been affected by this as the price surge means they would need to charge above the gov's cap or else they'll be supplying at a loss. So the same thing that took the smaller suppliers who hadn't hedged (bought in future supplies at a price) down, stops the remaining suppliers wanting to take the customers on. How do you get around that without dropping or amending the cap and letting the suppliers then pass the increase onto the customers left without a supplier?

Avro, synergy, bulb, and green. Ours went bust because they couldn't afford to pay the government green taxes. Oh,yeah I forgot it took 5 months to get back the money I had paid in advance with the DD. That does seem huge for a 3 beds semi.am also with Octopus
