It didn’t exclude me from the best deal, they know they mustn't by law push them on a person.
    That's useful to know Lyn.
And might be why they've not tried to fit one this time.

And @stevetu, I would love a little windmill on my roof!

Why aren't solar panels mandatory on all new builds where applicable?
politicians, heritage officers, planning laws, general bureaucratic sluggishness.
@Pete.8 yes, economy 7 and economy 10 tariffs still exist

Far from mandating solar panels, they abolish solar tarrifs. And then host COP.
You would think there are levels of shame which a human would cringe to sink below, that the astonishing hypocrisy would eventually become all too much. But apparently not.

The white line on the top chart is demand. the yellow line on the bottom one is solar generation. As you surmise, in one day, the profile of the solar energy generated and the energy needed are actually pretty close; more generated in the day when demand is high and less at night when demand is less.

It works less well when you look at it seasonally, with less generated and higher demand in Winter, and lower demand in summer when the solar output is higher. Wind, on the other hand, generates more in Winter, as a rule and is essentially blind to day or night. Therefore we need energy storage more for wind than for solar.

The other factor is nuclear which is on all the time. If we have a very sunny windy day, we sometimes don't need nuclear but we can't turn it off, so then we get a surplus and the Grid has a problem managing the excess. It's not happened much this year, with a dull, calm summer. It did last year though.

I take it back @raisingirl - I'm having a bad day and don't like unexplained jargon and acronyms. I'm sure if I spent some time with the time with the site I could get to know how it's structured.

I tend to assess the success of sites by whether I think my 83 year old dad could navigate it easily and feel at home with the data being shared; Whether he is being invited back.

It's definitely a geek website, @Fire. Sadly, I'm a geek on this stuff

I am interested too. I am also interested in web design that can make large amounts of detailed info accessible and inviting to everyone. Like Amazon. I don't buy from the company and loathe its search algorithms (it makes me want to hurl the comp out the window) - but I think its web design does present vast info well and is easy to navigate - which is partly why it's been such a success. Inclusion of intent is important.
