I was looking at that duchess @Omori isnt it quite a small size too? Lots of colour still here. New clematis, not sure its what I thought id planted but its lovely! First Echinacea doing well. Rest are just leaved. Very ugly looking spikey brown buds though... Thought id got the wrong thing to start with! Highgrove
Copper lights as it ages Nostalgia Glenfidditch Brother Cadfael. Superb this year. Stunning scent, between it and sweet syrie they fill the air over that side with perfume.
Lady of shallot, climbing well now. Abracadabra - although elsewheres seems a very much darker red. Im Tempted to get one from styles too.
@JessicaS Yes Duchess of Cornwall is quite small, and the flowers have a beautiful fragrance. Could that clematis be Tsukiko? Your garden has a lovely cottage feel.
Will be moving to a new place in the next 3-6 months, so no new purchases for me.
OH has got a job elsewhere so I will have to move too. The thought of moving 30 plus pots of roses is scary.... That too most of them are terracota... anyways, will see it then..
Eleanor.. Most probably wont make the transfer to the new place.. A beautiful lavender when it opens (if it opens), balls easily with rain and is an eyesore when that happens...
Golden celebration, Boscobel, Rachel, Wellbeing
Odelia, Summer romance, Eustacia vye
Comte dC, Desdemona, Grafin Diana
Lyda rose (a bit faded).. at this point you get that spicy scent by just standing next to it.. favoured by bees, very healthy, needs good pruning to keep it short (in a pot)
Earlier someone had posted regarding Gabriel Oak and Eustacia.. I like both, for me Gabriel Oak has been a non stop bloomer (first year from bare root). Eustacia produces more in flushes and takes a break in between. Health wise, I would give it to GO, though both are good. I spray my roses monthly with Rose clear. So not a no spray garden...
My rose arch has arrived much earlier than expected so we were able to install it over the weekend: This is my scribbled rose planting plan so far: Lady of Shallot trained to climb the shed. Mortimer Sackler over the left side of the arch. Was planning to put Strawberry Hill on the right of the arch but @Marlorena made a very good case for having the same rose either side of an arch so I’m now undecided....Although I have a potted Strawberry Hill so I need to find somewhere for it.
@Nollie and others made a very convincing case for Julia Child. Yellow roses were my Nan’s favourite and we lay them on her grave on her birthday so this would be a nice tribute. Planning for back fence raised bed.
Also had several recommendations for Olivia Rose Austin but I don’t know where to squeeze it in. Would it be too much pink in a small space with MS?
For fragrance I think I’d like Gertrude Jekyll, probably trained to climb the right fence where it can’t try and spear the children with it’s evil talons.
Compassion is a must have. I don’t really have the right place for it with the stiff upright growth but it is sentimental to me and the smell takes me back to my childhood. I might grow it against the left fence behind the shed.
But I’m stumped on what rose to grow over the roof of the pergola. The area is in full sun all day and it’d be nice to have some shade cast on the seating below as it gets very hot. The pergola roof measures 3m x 2.5m so is petite. Any suggestions for a scented rose that will give good coverage for shade cover but won’t try and romp away into the neighbours’ gardens? It doesn’t have to be DA and I’m open to once flowering if it puts on an amazing show. Disease resistance is useful as I don’t spray and it won’t give much shade cover if it defoliates from BS.... Or should I be thinking about a different climber altogether?
Picture of unknown patio rose today. The foliage has regrown after its earlier defoliation. Absolutely crammed with buds again. Unlike Strawberry Hill that has had only one bud on it refusing to open for over 3 weeks.
@cooldoc, I had asked about GO and Eustacia V. Thanks for replying.
Good luck with move. Hope all pots survive the move. It's always exciting to have a new garden. Ignore OH and put nice garden as a first in priority when searching for house 😉
It’s always exciting to open this chocolate box of a thread to see what rose goodies are inside and it never disappoints.
Great to hear your plans @MuseLea, your garden is all coming together beautifully. I wonder if two MS on your arch would be too much and you would be fighting your way through? I think I would put a contrasting colour tall shrub or short, mannerly climber on the right, white maybe? You could always pillar SH on one of the legs of the pergola.
Most of my brightly coloured roses in the West garden are winding down, except JC of course, but I’m enjoying a renewed flush of growth in the East garden..

Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
My garden is an awful mess at the moment and I lost most of my roses’ blooms to sawflies this year. but today I have a little flower on Desprez a Fleur Jaunes, it’s still very small, I read that it takes 3 years minimum to really start and growing, I planted it last years so… patience!
This is Rose Gaujard, difficult to take a picture of it due to its peculiar silver lined color
Any of you has Parkdirektor Riggers? I need a red or dark pink rose to put in a very shady spot and I read this one can do. Or maybe Falstaff from DA?
