@Athelas ... regarding pruning, whilst it may not be what I do, it's recommended to cut first season Austin's back down to about 1 foot to promote a bushy shape..
..re your pink German rose.. it's not going to be possible to say definitively, but in Germany, roses bred by Wilhelm Kordes are always popular as he's the main local breeder, and his roses are well known internationally, one of the world's greatest rose breeding families....it looks typically Kordes and one of his that looks very similar is 'Pomponella' aka 'Pomponella Fairy Tale'... not actually a climber as such, it's capable of a large size up to 6-8 feet, even 10 feet, it's reputedly very vigorous and quite wide.. I'm not sure it's sold in the Uk but if you see reports of it growing to just 80cm, I think you can safely ignore them, it will do that in the first season.. I've read a report it's not terribly rain resistant but it's been available since 2005...
..here are some photos with a similar look, to compare.. whoops, the links don't work.. sorry..
Thanks some much for the advice on pruning @Marlorena (I’ll be doing that), and for the ID — no worries about the photos, I’ve looked up some online. It does look like Pomponella Fairy Tale! It probably wasn’t a climber and I’ve misremembered.
Jubilee Celebration looks amazing, @newbie77! Here’s to January and February flying by…
Hi @Marlorena, I’m still alive and well and looking in now and then 😊
It’s been endless weeks of freezing temps every morning here, -5 to -7c so we’re wrapped up like arctic explorers for early dog walking. At least it’s clear blue skies and sunny afternoons to compensate though. I have been fretting and fussing over my new baby chinas and teas - some tip dieback but covering them at night has seen off anything worse.
Great idea of cheery pics, here’s Soul and Julia Child on the 1st of June:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Nice to see post from you @Nollie and great to hear that you are well.
My compost bin has a mouse!!!! Yesterday i poured a packet of garlic powder inside the bin. Mouse was still there today morning. I dont know what to do about it Recently worms have been missing from the bin, i hope mouse hasnt eaten them.
DA site is now showing the box to enter code but I dont know any code. Anyone received any code recently?
..perhaps the catalogue is due out soon? I hope so Newbie..
..more from last June.. 'Cornelia' with Foxglove and Penstemon.. R. sancta.. The Holy Rose of Abyssinia.. quite an historic rose, opening pale pink to white... from Mannington.. ..today... this puts me on a high.. I just know you'll get that..
Lovely to see what's ahead for us. Gorgeous roses in those pictures. I had a late start last summer because of deer attack but these escaped. Wildberry, WollertonOH, Eglantyne and Charles Darwin. Today I used a sunny midday to nearly finish the pruning. I gathered some hips but really don't need any more roses, will sow them anyway. Good to get more tips on pruning particularly the ramblers. At the moment I can't see myself defoliating those, far too many leaves, they aren't going dormant at all.
