Thanks @Marlorena, missed your post earlier for some reason. Typically ASG was one I had in my basket at one point. Looks lovely foliage. I will bear it in mind for future but persevere with MAC for a while and see if it improves next year. Iceberg didn’t repeat at all for me. Sad to hear your MAM may have to go, I will need to carry the torch on that one for you!
@dabolem mine is in a large pot in a sheltered spot against an east wall, so morning sun only, but even that can be strong here in summer. I don’t know how it will do for you of course, Tack’s behaves differently, but here is mine in climbing mode, currently about 140cm high excluding the pot or 175cm including it. With a little encouragement I think I could get it up and over the rest of my brick archway:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
..fabulous rose isn't it? who would have thought? I'm tempted to try and source one myself..
.. no problems @Nollie it's easy to miss posts here.. something to consider for the future maybe, it's a long time since I had that rose but the foliage is beautiful I think..
Tack's and Celcius's potted roses are always superb and put mine totally to shame for somebody who is supposed to know about roses ... but pots for me are on sufferance rather than desired, as I've nowhere else to put them, so that's my excuse.. 'Frilly Cuff' my best at the moment.. really liking this rose and so pleased I got it after toying with it for some time..
Anyway, I have something nice to report.. I have not used this plant nursery before and never heard of them in fact, so just to say that Let's Go Plantingwho are based in Somerset get praises from me today...
I ordered this Philadelphus 'Beauclerk' on Monday, despatched Tuesday arrived today.. there is currently an offer of 2 free plants as a bonus, but I declined those as if they're not what I want then they just get thrown away and it's such a waste.. however I do not know what the 2 plants were, so the offer is there..
Cost £21 including delivery but most places out of stock at the moment, so if I want something I go for it..
..my only minor quibble is that, as it arrived in a tall box, they could have left the stems unpruned, as I see they've pruned them back a bit.. these plants don't flower well in the first year after planting unless they have a decent amount of 1 year old wood, ..still..
@Nollie your rose is stunning! It’s on my wish list and I will get it as soon as I can, East is good for me, .most of my garden have that kind of spots for plants, as it faces South.
@Marlorena what beautiful a Philadelphus you got yourself, I look forward to seeing it in full blossom in your pics. you have an excuse at least, I am really a disaster with potted plants, usually they die on me and I’m left without a clue as to why they did. Not my cup of tea, in fact usually I try to plant anything in the garden as soon as I receive them.
Oh, and obviously, Frilly Cuff is on the wishlist too… which is growing by the day, lol
@dabolem ..thanks... just about everybody here grows roses in pots better than I do, so many well tended roses, but I'm a shocker for neglect at times.. I don't feed anything like as much as one should... still, I have a couple today not looking too bad.
I think I've finally found positions for these two, after some juggling about.. 'Nathalie Nypels'.. 'Golden Memories'.. I feel like Spring has arrived as I've just repotted this gorgeous scented rose that's been in the greenhouse all summer.. I think it went 'own root' as the rootstock died, so the rose nearly went with it, but survival is the name of the game.. the roots looked like own root to me when I tipped it out and all the growth is from one cane..
I do not know how it does in damp or rain, but otherwise this English rose lookalike with the DA foliage [bred from Graham Thomas] is impressing me very much
'The Anniversary Rose' [Dee-Lish.. Elbflorenz... Line Renaud.. etc]
Your TP is beautiful @Nollie, when mine grows up I'd like it to look as good as that, it's encouraging that the stems might get stronger.
Frilly Cuff is good @Marlorena, I thought my England's Rose does much the same job for me but the fact that FC's blooms hold on longer than ER's changes things in its favour . I get lots of blooms but they don't individually hang around for more than 3 days. I wish you well with your Philadelphus, we've recently done battle with an out of control one, in taking out the oldest stems it ended up unsupported and horizontal on the lawn, a loop of bailer twine tied back to a fence post and you'd never know!
Edit to show you my Alexandre Girault today
Kind comments @dabolem, thank you, but other than making sure the pots are fed , watered and deadheaded regularly there is no special knack needed. I do think I am lucky with my garden's suitability for these pots; sheltered and south facing in a dryish climate.
Does anybody know if Trevor White give out discount codes for their bare roots any time soon please? I nearly always seem to have just ordered when retailers issue them.
@Tack ...yes I have England's Rose too, so know what you mean there... I think it'll be a nice rose in time in my garden..
Your 'AG' is doing well, it'll soon be up that tree.. I might have expected it to throw up more shoots from the base by now.. it will in time when it really takes off, but even in the first year several normally appear including on 'own root' plants of that size.. perhaps the winter waterlogging set it back a bit..
..yes Philadelphus can get rather straggly and unkempt.. but 'Beauclerk' is compact and especially good for small gardens, I've had this one before.. it has a maroon blotch and highly fragrant.. the best one for growing in my narrow borders.. ...
.. I don't think Trevor White do sales on bare roots at this time, I don't recall ever seeing that... potted roses end of season I think they do..
..some autumnal pictures.. 'Lady of Shalott'... rich colours.. 'Tottering by Gently'.. ground hugging soft foliage like an Artemisia.. this is Rhodanthemum 'Marrakech'.. flowers early Spring. Sedum 'Autumn Joy' just the right colour I think.. Salvia 'Royal Bumble'.. Scabious 'Pacific Blue'.. recently planted rose 'Gruss an Aachen'.. 'Cornelia'.. Pittosporum 'Tom Thumb'.. Griselinia 'Bantry Bay' .. short Box hedge at back. Geranium Macrorrhizum ground cover.. I aim to re-do most of this bed..
Nathalie Nypels is on my wishlist too @Marlorena I find its shade of pink lovely and I like its small flowers.
I see that you are making your Alexandre Girault up on a tree, @Tack! Which kind of tree this is? I’d like to try and put a climbing rose on ne of my palms, I saw that they did it on the palms of Quirinale Palace in Rome. Granted they are different palms from mine, but I’s like to try all the same because I don’t like the palm bare trunks (I have 4 Trchycarpus Fortunei, they were already here when we moved and it would cost a leg to root out them, so we “decided” to keep them, lol)
oh, I almost forgot to ask: those of you who have Marie Pavie, is it in full sun or in some shade? I am asking because mine is in full sun and completely stopped to bloom and also to grow. She has restarted just now that is colder.
