I'm talking 60s here @Lyn with both parents earning a good salary and buying a house but no spare money for frills. There was a lot of beans or egg on toast too when funds were tight.

I was talking 40/50’s although dinners didn’t change much when I was at home, you could tell the days of the week by the dinner. My mum wouldn’t have a clue about lasagne, chilli con carne or anything like that, and my dad wouldn’t have eaten it.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
My Dad had his own business, and my Mum was very much a traditional housewife when we were young. They sacrificed a lot for us. Very little money to spare. Mince and doughballs was another common meal here.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Tripe was 50s @Lyn but stopped when we moved to Manchester in 1960 and both had better paid jobs. Did have just bread and jam sometimes. Never a sugar sandwich tho. Too unhealthy. Both medics. No fireworks either for the same reason.

Oh yes - clean plates were a must I think that's when I decided that if I ever had children, I wouldn't make an endless fuss about what they ate, and finishing everything etc. Give them as much fresh food as possible and not overload the plates. Different times though.
I do remember my sister throwing hers against the wall though ....
