As a kid living in the country,it was bunny rabbits and pigeons, caught by Derek next door, fish from my late father, they grew veg and fruit. Sunday was sometimes stuffed heart. Late mum cooked the meat lo and slo then it would be cottage or shepherd pie, cold cuts, with pickle. She walked to the Butchers daily. Sliced tongue,no ham. Plenty of eggs,we had chicken. She made wicked Yorkshire Puddings, and left overs were served with golden syrup. Fish on Friday and liver, bacon, onions, weekly.
As a child, I don’t remember having meat at home, apart from Sunday roasts, a small chicken between the eight of us, or a small piece of beef. Beef skirt was a big favourite, mum would ask the butcher to cut a pocket into the piece of meat, and then she would stuff it with Paxo sage and onion stuffing. Delicious. However, I did hate it when I was sent to the butchers to buy ‘a piece of skirt’. Used to generate a lot of grinning and eyebrow wagging, and comments along the lines of ‘ a nice piece of skirt, butchers delight!’, which I didn’t get at the time, but still found very embarrassing! The rest of the week, it was school dinners and bread and jam for tea.
@Lizzie27 Bok choi or ribbed out cavelo nero lightly fried in butter with garlic, loads of salt might bring you around to greens. But good to fill up on veg that you do love. Frozen and/or canned veg counts too.
I understand where you're coming from @Fire but to me that dish sounds very unhealthy and surely negates the health benefits of the green veg in the first place. I'm afraid I don't see the point of smothering veg in sauces, spices, salt or fat. I'd sooner eat something plain and savour the original taste.
I know I'm probably in the minority here and terribly old-fashioned.
A quick stir fry in a little butter or olive oil isn't a bad thing. You can dry off the oil after if it bothers you. I was just sharing of ways to make cabbage shine. I find the meal entirely delicious. The same with chard - a bit of salt and lemon juice. The idea to get the greens to wilt a bit and have loads of flavour and be gorg.
@Lizzie27 I like meat too. But I also love veggies. And I am fairly picky - no fatty meat for me, no skin, no gristle, and other questionable bits. A good steak? Yes, please But I'll take it with roasted carrots (with butter and a little bit of honey) and with steamed green beans (again, with butter) rather than with potatoes or chips. And I don't understand the need to have meat in everything. Using mince often or cheap pieces just to have meat doesn't make sense to me.
@Fire, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to question your choices, I'm sure your dishes are delicious. I think my trouble is that I'm just not into food and don't enjoy cooking much.
Hear hear.. I eat meat or fish about 5 times a week. Not lamb, veal, venison or game because I think it's unnecessary...and vastly over rated. Don't eat bacon but love a good sausage. Also love liver and mutton (when I can find it) and shellfish. I don't analyse it unduly but if I fancy a veggie dish I will. Probably more so now as its harvest time for a lot of summer veg.
Anyone into road kill? Was all the rage some years ago. There are a lot of rural areas where farmers can only graze sheep and cattle, if people cut down too much they won’t be able to farm anymore, the small farmers are hanging on by the skin of their teeth as it is. Towns folk will say that they can grow crops for food instead, they can’t, the land isn’t suitable.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
