I don’t know much about gas heating, never had that but I do feel sorry for the people who have no choice.
Our oil has just been delivered,  cheaper than when we had the system installed about 12 years ago.  Happy with that.

3years with Octopus, they have to best Which? Customer service ratings. They were ,2nd cheapest, hadn't heard of the other company. Had trouble with EDF, BG, major problems with Scottish power, who took 9months, and froze my account.went to extra who went bust. Put back with SP who took 4 months to give me an  account number, course that's the first thing they ask for, then they gave me several. Refixed april last year,24 months. It's  not fuel 'probably" going up in April. Forecast for average use £600,same for September. There are no cheap deals. My daughter was also put with Octopus. They did take several months to set up, because they took on so many customers.  Regarding e mails. Used to be auto reply, get back to you in 3 days. Now, not even that. My sons who've had problems with drs, consultants, DWP,they have "record my call" set on their PCs, so they have proof. They all use WFH and the pandemic as an excuse

@Fairygirl, for your home insurance have you tried looking at a price comparison site and then getting a quote directly from the top 2 or 3 quoted companies?  Sometimes the price comparison site offer is actually better, with an incentive.  I switched my cover back to Tesco this year and got Clubcard points worth £25 which made their's the cheapest quote.  Make sure you opt out of the contact choices on the price comparison site if possible to avoid nuisance calls.  (You probably already know this!)

We were. quoted around £600 building and contents, looked at comparisons on Martin Lewes site. There was one around £100 never heard of the company. Went with next one,yes Tesco £150 no brainer.

I do all the usual stuff @Plantminded ;)
I don't have to do anything until mid Feb. The current company I'm with is around the same price, but I haven't had any renewal stuff from them yet.
I only pay around £100 for buildings/contents. With all the things I add in. I know someone who lived in a similar house, similar everything. They were paying around 400 quid. They'd never bothered looking around. Mad.
    Oh @Lyn:/
The problem is that there's too much short sightedness with heating. Banning gas boilers, and yes - oil will follow - before there's a suitable alternative that will work for everyone is lunacy, but that's what's happening. The situation re the Cambo oilfield is a classic example. I know I've mentioned it before on the forum. Once we're importing oil at hideous prices, maybe they'll have a rethink, but it'll be too late by then.

Gas boilers are being phased out in 2035. We have to have viable solutions by then.

I guessing that's never going to happen @Fire, just look at the smart meters rollout.

Smart meters are a choice though. Sources of heating often aren't, especially when you aren't connected to the main supplies, which is the case in many areas of the UK.
Rural areas of all kinds, and more isolated places - loads of them up here, as well as Wales and many parts of England.
