I think both salsas lacked "armography" of the various set figures and of which we see very little in Strictly performances.  In salsa, the feet do the same basic steps/rhythm whatever the figure and it may be forward and back or side to side but it's always 1, 2, 3...5, 6, 7...  All the interest then comes in the positioning of the couple relative to each other and the arm action.  Needless to say in a a salsa club, squished like sardines on the dance floor, no lifts.

For me then, both John's and AJ's salsas were disappointing but I gather the mistakes in the lifts actually came from the professional presenting the wrong hand or arm and messing it up.  I'd like to see both done again to see if they can get it right.

Rhys finally came up trumps and did a very good Argentine tango - far better than I expected - but I don't think his performances over the series merit a place in the finals.  It's taken him too long to grasp that dancing well is not just about energy but also about mind set and feeling the music.

I loved Dan's tango - great music, classic steps well executed and a lovely choreography throughout.  He seems to grow in technique and performance each week and is a walking/dancing master class in what can be achieved if you just try hard enough and enjoy it.  For a complete non dancer, non performer, non actor he's been just brilliant and very engaging.

I enjoyed Rose's dance too but feel she's gone off the boil a bit since her couple's choice performance.  However, I live the collaboration between her and Giovanni and hope they go thru.

I thought Dans dance was very good and he seemed to continually improve sorry to see him go but once in dance off unless the others made a big mistake he would be voted off
My favourite is still Rose & G
  • Think the right one went tonight.
Im looking forward to seeing two dances each next week too.

Something occured to me as l was drifting off to sleep last night thinking about Strictly.
On Saturday night, Shirley gave Dan a 9 .
The general consensus of the other three judges was that he had considerably "upped his game" in the dance off, l think Craig said something along the lines of it was the best dance he'd seen him perform. I therefore expected Shirley to say that she would have voted for Dan (not that it would have made any difference),  based on her voting on the live show where she gave AJ an 8, but no.
It's this kind of inconsistency that drives me nuts.
Onwards to the semi final !
  • I suspect that although the dance off is supposed to be judged only on the quality of the performance the dancers produce on that occasion, the judges inevitably take into consideration the potential the couples have.  Maybe the problem was that Shirley should only have given Dan 8 rather than 9 in his original performance... it must be impossible to be completely consistent.  AJ has always looked like a potential for the final, to me, whereas Dan - though he's worked incredibly hard and improved beyond all recognition - still doesn't claim to be a dancer.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • Shirley gave Dan a high score and to be honest Dan's dance looked half decent to me but Anton said that while Dan had started well when he got into hold his technique had fallen apart and Craig said that Dan had balance issues throughout, now I don't profess to know anything about technique or balance that's probably why Dan's dance looked alright to me but how can Shirley score so high when other judges pointed out errors, who was right Shirley or Anton and Craig?

I confess to knowing absolutely nothing about the technical details of either ballroom or Latin, in spite of having watched Strictly from the very first show 😊.
I think l have a very general idea of whether a dance is good in terms of footwork, plus of course there's taking into account the performance, the costumes, the lighting, and the music . The whole package as it were.
Sometimes l know l just enjoy it, whether it's Ed Balls doing "Gagnam Style" for the sheer fun of it, or Rhys' AT for the drama . It reminded me of Simon Webb and Kristina Rhianhoff dancing to "Roxanne".

I do think the right couples are into the semi finals and l think Dan did well thanks to Nadyia and the work he put in. His comment about someone coming into your life and turning the lights on had me a bit choked up.
  • I'm sure that Dan is a lovely man, a great husband and father, his wife must be one of the most understanding women in the world or is that just my old fashioned outlook on life, love, and the way of the world?
