    Hello all.

My Day 8 Covid test was negative, but I knew it would be. Track and Trace rang yesterday but I was outside gardening so didn't see it until the evening.

Glad you had a good time visiting rellies @Ladybird4.

Needs to be a very big planter @Rubee! I've just been cutting back my Choisya, it's huge, well taller than me. Unless you have one of the smaller varieties. I had a cloud bush, Cotinus, at my last house, it was like a tree.

I've been pruning the Philadelphus and dead heading the Albertine Rose. It's a grey day.

The acer would be good for the planter Ruby.
Busy, my Mum and Dad had an Albertine rose in their garden. It had vicious thorns but the scent was intoxicating so it was forgiven when it snagged me.

I had 3 at my old house that I planted in 1991, they got a bit out of control when 1st OH died in '98 as I lost interest in everything. Then I started gardening again but swore I wouldn't plant Albertine again, vicious thorns, once flowering. But it was already here at OH's cottage. Very pretty, wonderful scent.

Great news about your test result Busy. Yes, indeed, Albertine has to be approached with caution. I have a berberis in my front hedge which is somewhat similar. I treat that with the greatest of respect as it's thorns are 2.5cm long and I've had them go right through the sole of my gardening Crocs. No wonder berberis was used as an animal proof fencing material.

LBand Busy thanks for input .the planter is big it’s a large water but that sprung  a leak about six years ago .But I can see I will have to have a good think .Acer is very small I guess that could go in for a few years .Any ideas please ?

Ruby, it is not a good idea to put small plants into a big planter - different than when you are putting lots of annuals all together in a big planter. It would be a good idea to just plant on your small plants into pots about 5cm (2 inches) bigger than the ones they are in now. If they are potted into a much larger pot there is a chance that the compost stays wet and roots can rot. Acers grow very well in containers. The one outside my front window has been there for about 18 years. Not counting the container it is about 8-9 feet tall.
Welcome back Hazel. Have been thinking about you and wondering how things were. Sorry to hear your Mum is now seeming so frail. Such a worry for you all. The weather has been disgusting here - lots of rain and wind with the odd splash of sunshine so it could very well have been something similar that wreaked havoc in your garden. A tidy trim will probably help the plants.

Have you considered a rose Ruby? Mine grow well in planters and have the added advantage of being closer to the nose. Maybe with a few trailing things around the edges?
Hazel so sorry to hear about your mom, it’s such a worry and a heartache when those we love start to fail.
No rain here, spent 2 hours at allotment with the working party mostly pulling up bindweed from the communal area. Lovely to see my brothers though the housekeeping leaves a lot to be desired.
Back home now making plans for the tea of my week off.

Debs, I think that is a lovely suggestion for Ruby's planter

Thank you for your advice LB . I will make sure that whatever I plant in the water butt I will first plant it in an appropriately sized pot first .Debs a rose is also a good idea ,thank you .
