I probably fitted the criteria for being in poverty a good few years back by these modern definitions. This was before they increased the tax free allowance level. Indeed that's made a huge difference to me over the years. Despite fitting in this definition I bought a house, car and had three or more UK based holidays a year. I only once went into the red in my bank balance. That one month I had a couple of pounds until payday about a week off (monthly paid). In that week a bill sent out using the interest free overdraft facility my bank threw at me. That facility was significantly greater than my monthly pay.
Anyway, I often wonder about the way they measure poverty. They did not always measure it as they do now. When did the change the measure, why and is it the correct definition? There's many metrics around for many things and often organisations can choose the one that suits their outlook or aims? I'm not saying poverty definitions now do that but without understanding the metric and it's origins how can you really be sure it's not just spin?
Food poverty and poverty aren't the same thing. The incensed person referred to both, almost as if they were the same I thought. That could just be my take on what he/she posted and could be very wrong.
As to lies every government makes its own lies to suit it's own aims. Nobody remember Bliar's dodgy dossier just so the hand of history could touch Bliar's shoulder?? How many died through his support of Bush Jr's "finishing family business" with Iraq? Is that more or less than his government saved through reducing child poverty?
Of course Boris is an incompetent liar. He got voted into number ten despite everyone knowing that. I do not blame him for that or the electorate who voted for him. I blame the opposition party and Corbyn. A weak Labour leader and the direction he took the party in meant that there was no opposition to vote for. Not one people saw as viable for forming a government. We have Boris as much because of Corbyn's labour as any other reason. If child poverty increases then no opposition to Boris is at least partly to blame. For that I'm incensed!!
Poverty is when you haven't enough to eat. There are many people in that situation and not just the ones out of work.
Surely poverty is when the household income isn't enough to buy the essentials. There must be plenty in that situation, but there are plenty more who have a very distorted sense of priorities.Â
The conversation about poverty reminded me of the situation when I was at secondary school. We had to pay for our school dinners weekly in advance and were given a set of tickets for the week which had to be handed over as we entered the canteen. Those whose parents paid had green tickets, those on free school meals had pink. Even then as an 11 year old that seemed wrong to me. Why was it necessary for the dinner ladies or anybody else to know these kids were getting free meals? They were served exactly the same food as the rest of us.
I dislike terms like food poverty or fuel poverty. There is only one kind of poverty, and that is lack of money. How many people can afford their energy bill but cannot afford food, or vice versa? So why don't we just talk about poverty, plain and simple? And why do we talk about child poverty? It is not the children that lack money, it is the parents, so why not refer to it as parent poverty?
My old man goes out weekly and collects litter in our road,we pick up litter on the beach,we signed up to do it in our village. Original e mail was to the District council, who replied saying we had to contact me Clerk of our local parish council, they asked dates we were available, we said anytime. They said they would be in touch, they haven't. We wanted to sign up for the vaccine volunteers, couldn't before because we didn't have a smartphone. I haven't tried it as yet,but have found a lot of places won't accept the same phone number, twice,as my husband doesn't have a smartphone.
An obese child isnât evidence of being well nourished ... usually itâs quite the opposite and often a result of poverty.Â
Of course the child isnât well nourished, Â but if you can afford junk food you can afford good food, doesnât have to be the best labels, Â you can make a meal for 3/4 children from a loaf of bread, a tin of beans and 6 eggs, Â what would that cost in a SM such as Lidl, Â cost about ÂŁ1.50. Â they send them down the chippy , a portion of chips is ÂŁ3.00.Â

The problem is @Lyn that most have never been taught to cook let alone budget and know even less about nutrition.  That leads to a vicious cycle of poverty and ill health and poor outcomes.
