Indeed so. "Two wrongs don't make a right" At least drivers have to pass a driving test, pay for insurance and " road tax" and have their vehicles regularly checked. None of this applies to cyclists / horse riders / mobility scooter users.Â
But motorists are driving a heavy weapon that is capable of killing of not used safely. Like any machinery that is potentially very dangerous you often need training and proof of training to use.
Cycling is closer to walking in its potential harm. Perhaps we need pedestrians to pass a test, get their shoes checked and licenced too. Number plates for pedestrians?Â
Have you mentioned no road tax so not paying for the roads yet? I'm paying bingo with some people and that will win it for me. Oh forgot I need helmet and hi viz comment too!Â
I didn't mention " not paying for the roads" Please don't words in my mouth. You're sounding somewhat confrontational now. I'll leave you to your self righteousness.
Very fed up with the whole cyclist/road user prattle. There are stupid cyclists and stupid drivers and stupid pedestrians. All of them can be dangerous in the wrong circumstances. Spouting forth from a position of righteousness is not going to convince anyone otherwise.  We all have a duty of care to fellow road and path users.Â
Just for the record @Hostafan1, I have a British Horse Society road proficiency certificate after taking lessons and passing a test, theory and practice, for riding a horse on the roads. It's a pity drivers aren't more aware and I have to add that managing horses and cyclists never came up in my car driving lessons or test.

I WAS asked in my driving test " How would you overtake a horse" .
My point is, there's nothing to stop ME ( who has never been on a horse ) or anyone from getting on a horse and taking the roads. Clearly not safe for me, the horse or other road users. I've seen girls no more than about 10 years old on ponies on the road. Does anyone really think they're capable of controlling those ponies should they get spooked and bolt?
A bike is a carriage in the eyes of the law which means its rider has a legal right to be on carriageways unless there's restrictions banning it such as motorways.Â
A car is not legally a carriage but is covered by other later laws that require them to be licenced to use carriageways. They have no right only licenced to use them which means potentially the licence can be removed.
In that way a cyclist is more like a pedestrian which also have rights not licence. Rights are more entwined in our laws and require aiui primary legislation to remove.
BTW it all stems back to legal case from 1800s, I think it's 1836 or 1838 legal case but I can't exactly remember.
I bet you don't like that! It always astounds me the level of vitriol that gets levelled at cyclists. Also bias, prejudice and I suppose hatred top. You could say there's enough vitriol online against cyclists to give good cause to consider them hate crimes. Indeed some have lobbied for that. Personally I prefer it if people who cycle and are the law abiding majority of cyclists just educate and inform when they encounter anti cyclist prejudice. As a last resort register a complaint or report them.
It's interesting to note that for all the role breaking attributed to cyclists that it's an anti cyclist who's acted violently. Probably, if true, an assault. All you can do is to try and keep calm so you can attempt to educate them. The same people bringing up violence against cyclists are probably parents of kids who ride bikes. Do they hate their kids too when they're riding about?

Ok my last comment on the subject as when people have strong opposite opinions you will not change them and the issues will not be resolved on a gardening forum. Road tax by law is a tax on MOTOR VEHICLES and the money it raises goes into central government and only a small portion of it is actually spent on roads anyway. How do you make someone pass a bike test? What about the Borris bikes? Most kids do a cycle proficiancy at school is that ok? Can children not play on a bike until they pass a test and can i not permit my child to ride to the shop/school/park until they can pass said test. Which brings me on to another point (which i will be flamed for). I tell my young child to cycle on the pavement at times and keep off the roads, why, because where we live the roads are busy main roads with no cycle lanes etc. The only cycle lane is the last 800 yards outside the school and guess what...its always full of parked cars dropping kids off so my child has to cycle past on the busy road or opt for the pavement. Maybe if better cycling infrastructure was in place these conflicts would not occur. The government are trying to encourage greener travel but they need to support this to be a successs, especially in the bigger towns and cities. While cyclists and drivers are forced to share road space conflict will occur as there are idiots all around. No cyclist or driver has any more rights than the other. For all the comments above about cyclist i could easily change the word to driver and tell a similar story. Many cyclist have insurance via British cycling (125,000 members) and the likes.
I think now is the time to add the mention of cyclists to c*ts and b****t as subjects de trop on this thread. Let's agree to disagree, shake hands virtually and talk about something else.
I donât understand why the anger towards cyclists. They arenât as fast as cars, especially going uphill. It must feel so much pressure to have a stream of cars trailing behind then who canât over take. Iâd rather slow down and give them space, you rarely get held up that long. Why get angry? I donât get unduly angry at pedestrians either and some of them donât look when they cross. The point is that people do stupid things and I donât want to be anywhere near them if thereâs a chance of injury or collision.

Steam cleaners!! Who designs them for Karcher? Is he or she a Dyson relative or a plant?
Ours takes 9 minutes to get a head of steam before I can use it. It then runs out of water and thus steam before I've finished so I then have to wait for it to cool down enough to remove the stopper, a bit longer so I don't get spat at when I refill and then another 9 minutes till it's back up to steam. The cable is short so needs a socket change before I've finished and the head itself is a PITA. After years of faffing with one that kept coming detached I finally ordered a new head and it broke within 15 minutes so back to a bodge to hold it all together.

Bicycles can cause death too.
