Oh yes that pushes my button too B3. By the way, I didn't invent a new word, pedantry is a legitimate one. Huh, I thought I was on to something there. Might even have patented it.
Ooh - not heard that one @B3 - what's the context ? Is it when you have managed to "level up" and can therefore tick the box ? Or is it simply Social Media Dogs having more Ticks than another dog ? The mind boggles
As this thread is about words, I read once about the origin of a tick which I found interesting. I do not know if it’s true but ...
Many, many years ago a tutor, marking a pupil’s work, would write, in Latin, verum or true. Abbreviated, it would just be the letter v. This then got corrupted into a tick.
In the same vein, an X for a kiss relates (it’s said) to the times when illiterate folk would sign important documents with a cross. It was the custom then to kiss the mark as added emphasis and in this way an x took on the meaning of a kiss.
I detest the current fashion for saying “those ones” ... don’t people understand plural anymore ? What’s wrong with “those” .... it really is irritating and even educated people seem to be doing it these days !
@philippasmith2. Unfortunately, it was on the BBC news site today. I can't bring myself to identifywhere I observed this egregious abuse of the English language.
